This isn't easy for me to share, but I feel like I should... ...because I have a feeling someone out there needs to hear it. Below is a journal entry I just ran across that wrote back in February of 2017... nearly a decade ago. At the time, my business was "crushing it." At least, that's how it appeared from the outside looking in. Inside, we were treading water... barely making payroll... and I was burnt out and ready to throw in the towel. Here's what I wrote that day. Maybe you can relate: "I started this business because I wanted freedom and a chance to earn more than a normal job would provide. At first, things were great. The business was profitable, and a lot of that profit flowed down to me. But then something happened...as the business grew, profits dried up, sales slowed, and everything got harder and more complex. Now I’m working more than ever for less money... surrounded by people who don't appreciate the sacrifices I’m making just to cover payroll. I’d like to raise some money, but with flat growth and shrinking margins, no investor will give me the time of day. And even if I could get a bank loan (which isn’t likely), they would force me to sign a personal guarantee that would put everything at risk. I’m stuck...and no one seems to notice or care." -------- If I had a time machine and could go back to talk to myself, this is what I would say... Hey Ryan, I know it doesn't seem like it now, but you got this. You're in a storm, but this storm will pass. Just keep rowing. Don't give up. You'll be stronger for it, I promise. But for crying out loud, ask for help! Stop being the martyr. Stop playing the victim. Stop acting like you're the only one in this fight, because you aren't. You have partners. You have a team. You have a wife and kids who love you. Stop suffering in silence. Stop puting on a "brave face." You aren't broken and the business isn't broken. You've just grown to a point where you have no idea what you're doing. And that's not a bad thing, that's a good thing! But you have to ask for help because you have no idea what you're doing, and the skills that got you here won't get you where you need to go. You don't have to "figure it out for yourself." You don't have to "go it alone." You don't have to "learn to fish." ASK FOR THE FREAKIN' FISH!!! Don't wait until it's almost too late like your arrogant, idiotic future self did. Humble yourself. Ask for help. Because there are people out there who want to help. -------- I wish I could say all this to "younger me." Obviously, I can't, but if I could, it would have saved me a lot of fear, a lot of heartache, and a lot of regrets. (Because yes, I do have regrets.) But I know there are a lot of "younger mes" out there, and if you're one of them and it helped you, then I guess it was all worth it. Either way, just know I'm rooting for you. 🙏
