I don't understand the discourse. When I'm sick I want to see a medical doctor. When I'm in grad school, I want to be taught by someone with a PhD. I understand everyone wants their name in lights but we don't have to diminish the hard work of someone else to accomplish that. MD's go through 4 years of medical school, 4+ years of residency, additional fellowship years depending on their specialty. Many also are medical school professors or have students with them at the bedside.

There’s a reason “medical” is added before that “doctor.” It’s a stolen title. The word doctor comes from the Latin word docēre, meaning “to teach.” Originally, it referred to teachers/scholars/academics, not medical practitioners.
