@vollerEkel You get your furniture from yard sales, goodwill, FB marketplace, and back then Craigslist.

Question: if we're supposed to scrimp and save money for a house, and the solution is to eat literally poverty food like we lost a war, how on are we supposed to actually afford anything nice? Renovations, decent furniture, stuff like that.

@vollerEkel The same way people did 30 years, you buy a house that's tiny, you do it yourself. Then you buy a bigger one later. My first house in 99 was a 1300 square feet 4 bedroom.

Someone asked me about shirako, so let me answer honestly. If you come to Japan in winter, you might see this food. I like it. But I get why many people stop at the visual. It is white, soft, and not exactly beginner-friendly. Even in Japan, some people love it and some people will not touch it. So if you try shirako for the first time, my advice is simple. Start with tempura. Do not start with shirako ponzu. Shirako tempura is much easier. The outside is crispy. The inside is creamy. And because it is fried, you do not have to think too hard about what you are eating. Eat it hot with a little salt or tentsuyu. If you like it, try shirako ponzu next time. If you still cannot handle it, that is fine too. Some Japanese foods are amazing. But first, they ask for courage.

The "Cursed Soldiers" deserve to be more widely known in the West. Polish soldiers who in 1939 fought the Nazis, created the Polish underground army to resist the Nazis, betrayed by the communists in 1944, but continued resistance for decades. The last of them surrendered in 1963

@nabe1975 It's an interesting argument. Now let's look at the history of the Sabre and why it became the dominant sword later on.

@lefineder Ok, where are the Persian Cities. If you have them on one you should have them on the other. Merv and Balkh come to mind.

For a few Roman-era settlements/small towns, the reverse happened, and by the 8th century they grew into cities. Here are 8th-century cities and whether they derive from a Roman-era city, a Roman-era settlement, or were a post-Roman foundation."

How many Roman cities survived the Dark Ages collapse? Comparing a database of 405 Roman cities to a database of medieval cities, we can see that around 33 Roman cities survived as cities into the 8th century. The rest — around 372 (92%!) — were destroyed or depopulated to become small towns or settlements.

@devahaz We would recommend basic cookbooks. a.co/d/0fmxFLAI. But they would just yell it cost too much, or some people can't read or who has time to read or call it slop.

Main takeaway from a week of food discourse is most people on here just want to call people stupid and lazy for not knowing how to cook, rather than actually contributing anything to help people eat better and more affordably

Fun question: Exactly where is a guy in an apartment with roommates - because he can't afford a real house - supposed to keep the tools to do oil changes, let alone change out a water pump or replace a wheel bearing? And where does he even do it? Boomers take space for granted.

Again, this is a total different world. You didn’t buy Netflix and all of that. But TV was free. Now it’s not. You went to the movies, now people watch them on Amazon Prime. You need a cell phone to exist in today’s world. You had a land line. “We were frugal”. No.. you just existed in a world that was different and had less financial demands.
Todd Nida@ToddNidasqM

Back in the 70s we didn't take lavish vacations and didn't spend on iPhones, Netflix, Prime, Paramont +, internet, Amazon, DoorDash, and dining out all the time. Nowadays, people just choose to spend their money differently. Apartments were not luxury with exercise rooms, rooftop pools, and balconies. It was just different. Much more simple and money went a lot further.

@Taro_of_Agartha We got steak once a month. Stop making shit up. Most of the "cuts" we got were from sizzler and that was rare.

"Steak" used to mean dry aged t-bone or sirloin and it was legitimately a standard meal for the middle class from the 50s to the 80s. We've multiplied the acceptable cuts by like 5x, switched to bargain bin wet aging, but the price for all steak cuts still multipied 10x
Nomad Taro@Taro_of_Agartha

Richest country in history ok. I'd like a pecan or cherry pie slice or cheese cake slice for 25 cents thanks. Also a liter of sugar coke for the same. A ribeye and fries for 50 cents would be nice too.

Boomers think we went from ~700 McDonald's chains in 1965 to ~18,000 in 1995 by never eating out.
Gunner Gunther@GuntherGunin

@NEETzscheIDDQD No you dipshits just have no financial literacy or effort. People spend $20 on 5 guys when you can make 5 guys for $5 at home . This is the first generation to think eating out is not a luxury

@romanhelmetguy Not really, I don't feel Shame. That's useless. Marcus Aurelius wrote that the actions and opinions of others are entirely outside our control. If someone tries to humiliate or shame you, it is a reflection of their internal character, not yours.

This is a great example of how stupid many academics are. κυνώπιδος means ‘shameless.’ But Bret says that’s a bad translation, because people only call themselves κυνώπιδος when expressing shame. But duh! When a person calls themself shameless, they are expressing shame!
