The new hosts we identified include the regeneration models D. japonica and S. mediterranea, as well as invasive flatworms that could potentially contribute to dispersal of economically and ecologically harmful ciliate parasites (image by Jean-Lou Justine et al., PeerJ 6:e4672).

Our results support extended coevolution of parasitic ciliates and their flatworm hosts.
