@SigneSol0 @BenHaslamRacing A lot of the chest thumping "men" on here taking about whips and lefty snowflakes, would probably be fine with all those things.

People need to understand this. Just like with the whip, there should have been no compromise. Stand your ground on what you think is right and fair, and stop pandering to ill informed public opinion.

First they came for Greyhound racing. Jump racing is the next obvious target. Then it will be the flat. The moment an inch is given on any element of racing or gambling the antis move to the next element. Need a joined up approach to defending all racing and all gambling.

To question Paul Townend’s dedication to the welfare of his horses would be unthinkable Well said Michael
Michael Harris@mjyharris

I was standing on Ascot Heath for the Clarence House Chase in January when a tired Il Etait Temps and Paul Townend fell right in front of me at the second last. When horses fall I always look for them to get back on their feet quickly and I am always looking for them to continue with the herd and to check that they are sound. Il Etait Temps did not get up quickly. In fact he stayed down for a considerable amount of time. His jockey, Mr Townend stayed with him. The dreaded screens went up and they stayed up for a good 10 minutes. The horse ambulance arrived and the Ascot veterinary team were heavily present. Paul Townend remained with his horse showing considerable care. The longer the situation went on the more I feared the worse for the horse. I thought back to the Cyrname incident at Ascot which gave me some reassurance but I’d begun to give up hope. Paul Townend eventually emerged from behind the screen and I shouted to him asking if his horse was alright. He gave me the thumbs up and he got into a car to take him back to the weighing room. Seconds later the screens came down and Il Etait Temps walked soundly into the horse ambulance. Such a relieve. This horse went on to be a fantastic winner of this year’s Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival a couple of months later. I cannot possibly believe that Paul Townend would knowingly ride out a horse that he knew was injured. It beggars belief to think that anyone would believe that. That day at Ascot his prime concern was for the welfare and wellbeing of his horse and I find it inconceivable that that behaviour would not be a constant in his character and be the same for every horse that he rides.

The @BHAHorseracing blocking anyone who doesnt agree with their whitewash "investigation" of Townend and their hollow talk of animal welfare. All the blocking of dissent is probably why their posts have so little engagement.

@JackDunc1 Great answer, the way people are twisting themselves into pretzels to try and find a way to justify these horrors is sad to watch.

@sian_henry @itvracing @BHAHorseracing Im not sure thats justification really, except for a total ban. Yes all animals hurt themselves but not while being forced over jumps, or whipped with broken backs across a finish line, and certainly not for enjoyment and spectator "sport"

@penntapper82156 @itvracing @BHAHorseracing More died at Cheltenham. Horses die in flat races and in fields while turned out like mine did as he tore nerves in his neck and lost coordination of his hind quarters. It's very sad but unfortunately it happens.

@JamesMelville Just as well, considering he risks being whipped over the line with a broken back. He has also been so conditioned he would run with a broken mangled leg. Its a cruel sport

@GlammySpurs @emilyhewertson Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, very wrong, wrong. Wrongly categorising people so you can dismiss their concerns & justify enjoying animal cruelty. You'd be surprised who many vote for and the jobs they hold down. Animal rights isnt a left/right political issue. Its a humanity issue

@tunny2311 @declanmeagher76 No, not true. Many think non stunned slaughter should be banned & are vegetarian, because they dont like any animals suffering for their enjoyment. Animal cruelty isnt a left/right political issue, its an issue of making sure creatures arent suffering needlessly at human hands

@Joe_Cottam72 @elTav @DailyMail Sorry I dont buy it, the tv commentator knew the horse wasnt right, you are telling me an experienced jockey like him didnt know sitting on the poor creature. Had it have been earlier down the course he may have pulled up, but close to the post, he wanted the victory. Cruel guy

@elTav @penntapper82156 @DailyMail I get what you mean, the landing doesn’t look good, but there’s no way to tell the horse has broken his back there as was running well till over the line then he gave way

@MrRobK03 @penntapper82156 @DailyMail when a horse goes down like that how is any sane person's first instinct to go "mmm i should whip him more and get him across the line instead of pulling up and checking hes okay"

Get On George in the 1.20 at #aintree trying to run with a back leg that has SNAPPED - no doubt due to repetitive microtrauma over years of training and being started way too youngbefore skeletally mature - as is the way of racing….#youbettheydie - and yes, he’s now dead too.

@penntapper82156 @declanmeagher76 If there was any wrong doing, believe me, he would be investigated. They are very strict when it comes to horse welfare. It's entirely possible he didn't realise until right at the end. If you don't watch and listen to these programs then you will only ever assume the worst.

@MHalberstram12 @declanmeagher76 Im a working class human, and Im not whipped during a race in which Ive broken my back. Im not familiar with "jib it". Im assuming its you telling me to shut up because you don't like my opinion. Not exactly quality debating though is it. Being working class doesnt mean no class

Racing twitter is a pretty even split of people complaining that the Grand National isn’t enough of a test and people complaining that it’s too much of a test I’d judge that if everyone’s unhappy it’s probably spot on…

@holybulll So it doesnt matter how many horses die as long as it's not at the National or publicised. Hunt racing is dangerous & cruel. If athletes died at hurdles events, would you be fine with the events carrying on. These are just animals so ok if they die painfully for spectator sport?

Those weren’t in the Grand National. Tragic as the fatalities are, the only reason they are getting this publicity is because they were at Aintree (but over entirely different tracks and obstacles as the national). It infuriates me not because I don’t want injuries to be recognised and addressed by the sport, but because people are latching on to these horses’ deaths to pedal their anti-national agenda when they had nothing to do with the race
