I finally built the blog using 11ty. No WordPress. No Ghost. No Substack. No Squarespace. Python + 11ty + Regular ol' HTML + CSS (and very little JavaScript.) I don't want to keep building on somebody else's land. I've had enough scares with social media to understand you could be up there one day, and disappear the next. 11ty is a static site generator, which is very important for me. If you don't know what this means, a static site generator will take all of your code and "pre-generate" it as a bunch of static files you can host anywhere. I'm still working on the site's styling, but the next big decision I have to make is about hosting. So far, I've been hosting my site on Firebase. It's free for my traffic and I haven't had any issues with it, but I don't trust Google to keep Firebase around. I don't technically need to host the site on Netlify or Vercel because it's just a static site, but I could likely use them for free. What other options do I have?

Your health is at risk. My wife is a PhD microbiologist. She retired from the FDA in 2018. She and her team did vital research on food safety. They developed rapid testing methods for detecting pathogens (one of her tests was adopted by McDonalds). She was involved in identifying the pathogens found in BlueBell ice cream and Jack-in-the-Box and many other cases. There were a dozen or so other teams in her lab working to save lives and make food safer. They all got the axe today. And don't give me the BS that the FDA is corrupt. These are scientists not politicians. She couldn't even accept a box of donuts from an equipment salesman and they made me sell my stock in OXO Good Grips because the FDA regulates kitchen tools. They worked long and hard for you. This is sad.
