Autodesk’s fine has bankrupted our small studio.
A few months ago, we made a serious mistake - we bought a Maya license from a fraudulent third-party seller. Autodesk hit us with a massive fine, far larger than the original error. Even after we explained our situation as a two-person indie team, they still enforced it in full.

@ScottApogee I was a toddler when Max Payne released, and I didn't play it until I was in my mid 20s, so no nostalgia here, incase people consider that a factor.

@ScottApogee I love Max Payne's art style; it's a unique abstraction of reality. The photo sourced textures on the low poly environment creates a world you could only experience in a video game.
Regarding "realism", real life will always win that battle.

I have to admit that absolute visual realism is not what I'm looking for in a game. I much prefer a stylized visual look that takes me into an alternate reality.
Yet, with Max Payne we purposely chose to use photo-sourced art in the game, but at the same time we knew that it wouldn't come across as totally realistic. The tech back then didn't support true realism. But it does now. And while true realism can work for some games, it's not a selling point to me. I'd rather play a game with unique visuals that creates a world aesthetic I can't see IRL.
I'd love to hear other thoughts on this.

Graphical realism in video games really sucks. Imo games with “aged” graphics feel much more timeless precisely because they lie in that sort of uncanny valley. It’s like entering a dream world and that made the sense of escapism much more profound.

This is really excellent, allows ambitious young people to have a place to sleep in the social/economic/cultural epicenter of the world.
