SAF condemns the passage of an "assault weapon" and magazine ban in Virginia's House and Senate and urges the Governor to veto it, though we expect she will sign it into law. As the DC Court of Appeals just recently confirmed, semiautomatic firearms and their magazines are in common use and protected by the Second Amendment. We hope the Supreme Court finally takes up a case on this critical issue soon. SAF has 11 active cases around the country challenging bans on common firearms and their magazines, including two pending before the Supreme Court. While any new lawsuit in VA would face an immediate uphill climb because of the Fourth Circuit's poor ruling in Bianchi (Snope), its fortunes would reverse if the Supreme Court finally grants cert in a similar case.
