#Hantavirus update: As of 12 May, no new deaths have been reported since 2 May. Of the 11 total cases reported to @WHO, eight have been laboratory-confirmed as Andes virus infections. One remaining case is undergoing further testing.
WHO continues to assess the risk to the global population as low.
We remain in close contact with experts from all involved countries and continue to receive weekly reports on the health and well-being of passengers and crew through official IHR channels. International coordination continues to support efforts to protect public health.

So important distinction, the Asian hantaviruses cause a renal syndrome whereas the New World hantaviruses like Sin Nombre in the American Southwest or Andes virus on the cruise ship cause HPS hantavirus pulmonary syndrome

El profesor @PeterHotez tranquiliza respecto al potencial pandémico del #Hantavirus. Pero advierte : vendrán más virus de animales. Lo atribuye a que estamos más cerca de ellos. Por el calentamiento, que les empuja a emigrar a nuevos hábitats, por la deforestación y la urbanización.
Yo añado otra: la imprudencia de ciertos humanos que se van a basureros infectados de ratas. No es por aumento de temperatura, sino por anulación de la prudencia.
