@ATT is experiencing strong success with its convergence strategy that combines fiber and mobile. At the end of 2025, it had a convergence rate of 42% and is targeting 50%, putting competitive pressure on cable companies and their bundled offerings. @Light_Reading: lightreading.com/5g/at-t-s-onec…

AI is clearly going to play an ever greater role in cellular networks. This NVIDEA paper, "AI-RAN: Transforming RAN with AI-Driven Computing Infrastructure," discusses the architecture and the different options, including AI for RAN, AI and RAN, and AI on RAN. ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/11141…

Government strategy on spectrum has significant consequences for the wireless industry and its many millions of users. For insights on latest directions, I recommend this Georgetown Little Nuggets discussion with Tricia Paoletta, Senior Advisor for Spectrum at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (@NTIAgov). Noon ET, Wednesday, March 25. Georgetown University Center for Business and Public Policy (@GeorgetownCBPP). Registration: tinyurl.com/yckf6d4b

An important development for 5G and 6G network architecture is the formation of the Open Centralized Unit Distributed Unit (OCUDU) Ecosystem Foundation, including participation by industry, the Pentagon, the Linux Foundation, and the National Spectrum Consortium (of which I am a member). The goal is to develop an open-source software stack for the RAN, which could facilitate AI integration. tinyurl.com/akwduz7m

5G Americas has done tremendous work over the years to promote and support the wireless industry. Its conclusion of operations this month signifies the end of an era. I wrote my first white paper for the organization in 2002 and provided annual updates through 2020, all of which are available on my web page. 5gamericas.org/5g-americas-an…

To understand the confluence of wireless infrastructure deployment, demand for additional fiber, the path toward 6G, and surging capacity demands driven by AI, I recommend this Georgetown Little Nuggets discussion with Iain Gillott, Vice President of Innovation & Technology for the Wireless Infrastructure Association. Noon ET, Wednesday, February 25. Georgetown University Center for Business and Public Policy (@GeorgetownCBPP).   Registration: georgetown.zoom.us/webinar/regist…

Smart glasses may finally liberate us from the habit of staring at our smartphones all day. Apple’s new emphasis on smart glasses, as discussed in this @Forbes article, should accelerate the move to this new platform.   forbes.com/sites/cathyhac…

The idea that direct-to-device satellites could deliver 4G/5G service directly to mobile devices in any and every location is absurd, as suggested by Michael Calabrese of the Open Technology Institute, quoted in this Fierce Network article. As my broadband comparison report from last year explains (available at rysavy.com), the United States has some 1,500 times as many cell sites as satellites in the sky, translating into massively greater network capacity. Furthermore, satellites have no indoor penetration. Thus, except in rural and other low-density areas, satellites simply cannot replace terrestrial networks. They can only complement them.   fierce-network.com/wireless/space…

The future of AI-driven networks and a potential component of 6G is semantic communication, which focuses on the exchange of meaning rather than the transmission of the ones and zeroes that fully describe an item. This IEEE Communications article, “Toward Compatible Semantic Communication: A Perspective on Digital Coding and Modulation,” explains the potential and the challenges. Optimal spectrum allocations for the U.S. wireless industry remain of crucial importance, especially with competing interests and 6G just around the corner. For important insights, I recommend this Georgetown Little Nuggets discussion with Tom Hazlett, professor of economics at Clemson University, and author of The Political Spectrum: The Tumultuous Liberation of Wireless Technology, from Herbert Hoover to the Smartphone. Noon ET, Wednesday, January 28. Georgetown University Center for Business and Public Policy (@GeorgetownCBPP).   Registration: georgetown.zoom.us/webinar/regist…

Centimeter wave, spanning 7 GHz to 14 GHz, will play a crucial role in next-generation wireless networks, including 6G. @SoftBank trials in Japan have shown 7 GHz to be effective for wide-area coverage in dense urban environments. This IEEE article provides a good analysis of the benefits and challenges of using cmWave. ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/11236…

I commend the White House for issuing a presidential memorandum titled "Winning the 6G Race," which emphasizes allocating a significant amount of new full-power spectrum that can be harmonized internationally, including 7.125–7.4 GHz. Other bands will be studied as well. Memorandum here: tinyurl.com/bdz3cb7n
