This Easter, I invite you to look at Jesus, consider what he said and did, and ask for yourself what I believe is the most important question you will ever answer: Did he really leave behind an empty tomb? And if he did, what does that mean for you? This video was made possible and in collaboration with my friends at @ChildlikeMedia.

The #FIFAWorldCup is a moment of “global connectivity” that allows longtime soccer fans and those new to the game alike “to feel every emotion known to humankind,” @MenInBlazers founder and CEO @rogbennett says. In his new book, “We Are the World (Cup),” Bennett recalls the history of the World Cup through his personal lens, starting in the 1970s. A great articulation by @gavinortlund of the issue here with @jamestalarico’s recent statements. It should be obvious that his statements about the Bible never talking about abortion and gay marriage are foolish. Alongside that though, what really stood out to me was James then saying that “how we’re going to be saved” is by essentially a description of moralistic pragmatism. Not only is that *not* how you’re going to be saved, it’s literally the opposite of how that happens. youtu.be/ESUVdjnhP9o?si…

I can’t see everything, of course - and I don’t mean to offer some definitive hot take. But I’m from Long Island, and I have connections in every place I’ve lived - Iowa, Chicago, Orlando, San Francisco, Michigan. And I know we all want a more safe and secure world. Lord knows, we do. But what I’m seeing and sensing is what folks in my world call trauma - collective trauma. Trauma is the absence of safety. It’s high-pitched anxiety, it’s persistent threat, it’s systemic overwhelm. I won’t rehearse the litany of domestic and international flashpoints. It’s not one. It’s the cumulative and compounding impact. It’s one-thing-after-another, not at all leading to some vision of human flourishing for God’s beloved image-bearers, but chaos and confusion for the sake of consolidating power and massaging the insatiable ego of the most insecure but consequential leader in the world. I won’t drone on. And maybe you’ve already tuned me out. But I’d ask - in the depths of your humanity, do you sense that what’s happening is leading to our shared flourishing? I could, at one point, sense this - from both Republican and Democratic leaders. But not now. Not now. What nearly 30 years of working with trauma has taught me, however, is that we find a way, an unfathomable resilience that defies logic. It’s our human capacity to choose real freedom, joy, hope, peace. I think we’re capable of it. But it might take you and me saying, “No more.” No more. And then, we’ll find our way back to our predictable party allegiances - our good and helpful debates about what cultivates our common good. I can’t wait. I’m ready for that. But for now, we’ll need to muster the courage to say, “No more. No more.” And then we’ll breathe again, I hope, amidst a boring normal, doing our very best to embody a humanity the world can aspire to.

Okay... I'm going to sound like real-life @ChrchCurmudgeon here, but here goes... If you are a church musician, and you honestly want to "lead people in worship" through music, you may want to do the following: 1) Pick a singable key for the median person who doesn't sing all the time. Don't pick a key to highlight your voice. 2) Lower the volume so people can hear the voices of those around them, and themselves. 3) Let people sing the melodies that are familiar to them. While you may want to jazz up or do the latest CCM twist of "Hark the Herald" or "Silent Night"--people can't follow you. They just want to sing the song. Picking keys to highlight your voice; playing at concert volume; doing creative rearrangements to make the familiar suddenly unfamiliar... all discourage us from singing. There's NOTHING wrong with highlighting your voice, or playing at concert volume, or doing creative rearrangements of songs... if you are a performer. Book a gig somewhere! Play out! Be great! Build a following! But please, when we all get together and sing, don't put up barriers to stop us.

Temptation will come. When it does here’s a simple battle plan: 1. Worship — Christ is better than sin 2. Announce —Preach the truth to yourself 3. Resist — Don’t negotiate The fight is real but so is our victory in Him!

The most effective and compelling way to spread the Christian faith is not to fight with those who don’t share our values - it’s to demonstrate the love of Christ in tangible ways to them -to live lives of compassion and integrity. Anger and self righteousness drives people away.
