@TheEconomist You messed up here, make it right and apologize, or you will lose another subscriber. The fact you also don’t have legal counsel warning that this isn’t ok is also very worrying.

We now know this stunning shot is by Iryna Rybakova, a press officer with Ukraine’s 93rd Mechanised Brigade. It was tweeted by the Ministry of Defence, so it could be seen worldwide. We reproduced it under Twitter’s terms and credited the MoD in our story: economist.com/leaders/2022/0…

Incompetence and brutality by Russian forces in Ukraine have exposed deep flaws at home. For Vladimir Putin, this is a crushing setback. Our cover this week econ.st/3LrbZ5p

@daleharvey I don’t think it’s that bad, focus is a little soft, but seems like a decent amount of starlight. Are you doing expose to the right? Seems like you could push the levels to really get the milky way to punch, but I kinda like your more subtle approach.

@AdobeCare The app has stalled trying to import the catalogue this time. Clearly there is some image that is corrupting the preview generation, and stalling the app. Are there logs?

@peterbraden Hi Peter, thanks for the details. Sorry for sounding repetitive. Could you please try to create a new test catalog as suggested before and then go to File > Import from another catalog and merge the catalogs following this: bityl.co/BH31? We hope this helps. Thanks!^SK

@giltayar Nonetheless, I appreciate you engaging with me on this. I understand your perspective more from this, even if I still disagree with it.

@giltayar JS has 2 future paths, either it ages gracefully like C, and remains around forever, or it grows into a monster that is so big and history laden that people actively shun it. (It already had a short period like this). I fear this proposal takes it down the path to monsterhood.

By now, some of you may have heard about the new proposal to be suggested to the TC39 committee. This innocent sounding title is for a proposal that suggests adding some level of typing to the JavaScript language. github.com/giltayar/propo… 🧵

@giltayar For a long time the rationale was that JS was the only web runtime, so it needed to cater to new audiences, but webasm and compile-to-js improvements have taken that reasoning away. Why now do we need js to expand it’s scope?

@giltayar I mean, I’d like to understand your position more, why is js “stagnation” a bad thing, and typescript taking mindshare not ok? at a certain point, isn’t a language mature, and thus can leave the new features to younger ones?

@peterbraden Almost everybody moves to TypeScript and JS stagnates.

@AdobeCare I should also mention, that the app crashes when attempting to quit afterwards. After attempting to relaunch, it hangs until a full system restart. This also occurred with the new catalogue.

@giltayar FWIW I am strongly against the proposal as it stands. The benefits, as opposed to letting compile-to-js languages be the de facto typing solution, seem minimal, and in exchange we get an ambiguous syntax and less simplicity.

@giltayar Hardcoding undefined behavior into the specification for a language is incredibly dangerous, especially when it’s interspersed with every statement. This proposal makes me worry for the future of javascript, and I don’t feel like the users of js will get enough input here.
