@YvonneBurford @oldfarmhorace @richarddigard Absolutely not true - finance sector has to comply with substance requirements which necessitates travel. Many airports across UK have increased passengers, where there is a variety of airlines. Those that relied on Flybe have seen reductions which collapsed just prior to Covid.

@peterdmills @oldfarmhorace @richarddigard We are down but by the same % as Jersey and not as much as the IoM. That’s because Covid fundamentally changed how people communicate and the need to travel so much. Added to that the trend has been downward for years as people live differently and have different priorities.

Talking of Jersey, an interesting quote on how Aurigny and Guernsey are perhaps regarded…

@peterdmills @richarddigard @aurigny @Govgg @blueislands I think you've misunderstood my view of risk. I believe the risk to our airline will increase from a taxpayers point of view because it is possible it will need more money pumped into it in addition to the millions that are no doubt about to be pumped into British airways.

@oldfarmhorace @richarddigard @aurigny is not at risk. It’s fully supported by @Govgg to detriment to other airlines (@blueislands included). Last time we had a Heathrow link (2019) overall London passengers increased. We don’t need more consultants reports, just the confidence/appetite to give it a go.

I hear the argument that improving air links is vital for growth and I do not disagree. But when I look at places like Jersey and the Isle of Man I notice something. They both have links with Heathrow. They both have several carriers. Yet their passenger numbers are still below their pre Covid peak. So before we assume that Heathrow in itself increases overall footfall rather than just shifting passengers from Gatwick and City onto a different route I would like to see the evidence. We already have two well supported London routes. What certainty do we have that a Heathrow rotation brings in new traffic rather than cannibalising the existing ones and putting Aurigny at even greater risk?

@oldfarmhorace @richarddigard I support economic growth and strategies to enable that. Improving air links is a critical part of that. Over 200,000 passengers down per annum since 2019 should be reason enough to look at ways to change this.

@peterdmills @richarddigard Can I take it that you are not also endorsing Heathrow? But you are purely criticizing, economic development, knee jerk reaction to give the impression they care about our national airline?

@oldfarmhorace @richarddigard This is nothing to do with my holidays being subsidised! You’re well aware from your marketing and business development days that you never limit your endeavours to one channel. We need to ensure we’re open for business and attract airlines - the impression is we’re not.

I would give up Aurigny tomorrow if I could trust Loganair to take up its mandate to always get our people home and commit to the long term. I would much prefer it if it was a deal with us than one led by Jersey. And I would love to be in a position where I wasn't paying taxes to subsidise Peter's tickets when he goes on holiday. Clearly by the speed that Logan air has moved Jersey has been in communication with them for some time and didn't pull the plug on BI until they had all their ducks in a row.

@MaryLowe501 @gavinstpier Indeed. It’s frustrating that very little affordable development has been done. The IDP was updated to include concept of local centres, yet no political encouragement to use (indeed some politicians worked against local centres). New draft IDP introduces more affordable sites.

@gavinstpier has had the last 13yrs to help first time buyers. At no time has he produced a Requete or Amendment to achieve this and bearing in mind its his and P&R Budget Report why wasn’t it included in a meaningful way
John Fernandez@JohnFernandez1

Budget debate resumes today. Expecting an amendment from @gavinstpier on committing to work to help first time buyers. Some deputies keen not to see it debated, if it supercedes @AidanDSMatthews amendment. Listen live on 1116MW, DAB+ or online: bbc.co.uk/news/live/c17p…

@DavidPiesing63 @richarddigard @GuyPlummer34449 @spice62005527 @Govgg Without private investment into affordable housing on smaller sites 1,500 new houses isn’t possible. Even with private investment likely to take another decade (certainly more than 1 political term) to resolve. This was all predictable but there hasn’t been the will to change.

@DavidPiesing63 @richarddigard @GuyPlummer34449 @spice62005527 @Govgg There’s been a lack of affordable housing development for over a decade. Revised IDP created concept of local centres to encourage further development. It’s failed. GHA doesn’t have the means to develop all affordable housing. New draft IDP is attempt something different 1/2

The short answer is that glasshouses were ruled as temporary structures, enabling owners to make money growing on what was otherwise protected, agricultural land. The deal was that if/when the spans became redundant, the open fields would return (because we don’t have that many).
The Young Guern@YoungGuern

guernseypress.com/news/2025/10/2… Why protect disused vineries? What social purpose does rotting wood and brambles serve? I’m so sick of this attitude. People are homeless, young people are fleeing the island in droves and our economy is stagnating but god forbid we clear derelict land.

@Govgg Looks like the H&SE executive and SOG need to reassess their respective roles in providing appropriate facilities to islanders and in this case need to reassess their decision.

@oldfarmhorace @richarddigard @Govgg @JayneOzanne It’s down to the people on the associations. You have to be prepared to stand up, be vocal and sometimes be unpopular. You also need an audience that is prepared to listen and accept things need doing and changing.

From The Times today. Intriguing question for Guernsey’s dominant industry - do we want its leaders regulated into managing risk or focused on growth, profit and employment?

@HeidiSoulsby @oldfarmhorace @richarddigard @Govgg The problem rests with the civil servants that advise P&R and ED committees. They are only focused on risk management. This has shifted completely in the last decade and will continue to cause decline unless changed (urgently)

@peterdmills @oldfarmhorace @richarddigard @Govgg When it came to the States I warned about the consequences. I think it needs amendment to create opportunities which I tried to do at the time but had push back that we needed ‘equivalence’ and would look at later.

@oldfarmhorace @richarddigard @Govgg Indeed with little commerciality and making even the simple domestic charity regime a nightmare. Again, thank P&R for the over the top regime. I believe would be run better under the GFSC.

@HeidiSoulsby @oldfarmhorace @richarddigard @Govgg Agreed. The ODPA is out of control and appears to make up the rules as they go along and has no effective governance on enforcement matters. I’m sure the team work on how many cases they can sanction.

@oldfarmhorace @peterdmills @richarddigard @Govgg I asked a genuine question. Short term I think not passing would be damaging but I do think there’s a genuine debate to be had on regulation more generally as the cost of compliance is impacting our competitiveness. GDPR is one area I flagged when it was brought in.

@oldfarmhorace @HeidiSoulsby @richarddigard @Govgg Agreed. We no longer appear to have a growth mindset in the ED or P&R civil servants. We need to remain compliant but don’t need to spent £23m and this doesn’t need to be the entire focus of the civil servants.

@HeidiSoulsby @peterdmills @richarddigard @Govgg We also have to remember that money val is not about commerciality but about AML. We can have a gross mindset without having to do business with criminals, which is all that money val is concerned about

@oldfarmhorace @richarddigard @Govgg Absolutely agree but not going to happen with the current civil servants. I’ve worked closely with number in P&R and ED and now it’s all about risk management and no policy for growth. You only have to look at the amount spent on MoneyVal and the lack of new initiatives from ED

@oldfarmhorace @richarddigard The problem (in Guernsey) often rests with more than the regulators. @Govgg is too risk adverse & has set the culture & policies at a level that means they everyone (regulators and industry) is now managing risk and limiting growth. UK and US govt have woken up & making change.
