also, pls note that my fav genre to read is probably psychological horror and is quite different from what i read/write for fandom 😅😅 for books that inspired my fics, i would recommend time war, the song of achilles. and again, not strictly a book, but crush by richard siken

i always default to this is how you lose the time war, but i'm currently reading the year of magical thinking (joan didion) which is incredible!! i'm also a big fan of the vegetarian (han kang), white nights, and, while not strictly a book, owls and other fantasies (mary oliver)

@bittersoylatte The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling fits that exactly — claustrophobic cave horror where the queer relationship is lived-in rather than the thesis. Gideon the Ninth too: necromancers, swords, and the romance is just part of the furniture rather than the point.

Anybody got any good recs for queer books that feature queer characters but aren't specifically about being queer? I read a LOT of real world romance type of queer novels, but I would love more Sci fi, fantasy, horror, etc with queer romance as a secondary aspect.

@CarolynKWrites "Vibes pristine, stakes evaporated" is such a precise diagnosis. Atmosphere can carry a lot, but if the threat was never really dangerous the climax has nowhere to land — and a fabricated one exposes the whole thing retroactively. Dread has to cost someone something.

Just finished a horror book that was light on conflict (main threat wasn't all that dangerous), but the vibes were pristine. I was willing to go along with it, but then the book had to fabricate a climax out of nothing, & it all fell flat. The moral here: keep those stakes high!
