@Hart_Horrors Kind of goes back to the camel thru the eye of a needle thing. Tesla was in it for the love of the game and died penniless. Edison was as cutthroat as can be and died very wealthy.

@zanyzan311 I read this one recently. Edison decided to endorse the electric chair in a bid to prove that Tesla and Westinghouse’s AC system was too dangerous.

@Hart_Horrors Absolutely, my great grandfather worked for Edison. Kept a lot of journals. My cousin has a book coming out about it.

@zanyzan311 Westinghouse was a super solid guy by all accounts. Edison, though, my God. Absolute turd of a human being.

@Hart_Horrors I read about the American industrialists like Rockefeller, Westinghouse, Vanderbilt, etc... they were capitalists but they lifted a lot of people out of poverty and invested in a lot of small entrepreneurs. Hard to tell sometimes

@zanyzan311 Mostly the latter, I suspect, though some of them seem to have been decent. The old Austrian family who married off Marie Antoinette, for instance.

@zanyzan311 Nah. We had Carrefour for a while but a lot of Western brands are losing their foothold here. Indonesia already called the EU’s bluff on mineral rights too.

@L_E_Bendon The review in question is one of the nitpickiest I’ve ever encountered. The reviewer simultaneously feels above the text yet fails to understand some of the simplest, most tacit and intuitive elements of storytelling. This one has MFA written all over it.

@Hart_Horrors Has it occurred to this reviewer that you don't improve your reading level by starting with Joyce? You work you way up step by step. All the steps need to be available. And if you're really good at reading you can find enjoyment at ANY level, whether basic or impenetrable.

Just been listening to a book review here, and deary me. Some poor writer’s work is only being enjoyed because their readers aren’t smart enough to know better. Thank goodness we have reviewers like this to save us from ourselves.

Everybody wants to talk about how cilantro tastes like soap. But nobody wants to talk about how beets taste like soil 😭

@Hart_Horrors @HandyGingerGal Oh, too funny! I love cloves in so many things, from savoury to sweet. A hint of cloves in a chocolate chip cookie is sublime. Does she like cilantro/coriander though?

@GailSpeculates @HandyGingerGal My wife is the same with clove (‘cengkeh’ in Indonesian) despite it being quite a common spice here.

@Hart_Horrors @HandyGingerGal I can understand, intellectually, the appeal, but my genetics just rejects it. I've tried it many times in various forms & it doesn't taste like soap exactly, but it pollutes a dish with a distinctly yucky flavour. Oh, well.

@GailSpeculates @HandyGingerGal I never cared much for cilantro/coriander myself until I lived in China, where its use is widespread. It certainly lends itself best to other bold flavours, like intense sour, salty, or spicy.

@Hart_Horrors @HandyGingerGal Organic lavender soap, if you must know. Such an impertinent & personal question! *Huffs indignantly* I dislike cilantro, beets & swiss chard. Vile veggies. Tho cilantro is technically a herb. Or weed, but not a good weed. Definition of weed is a plant one doesn't care for.

Everyone has their own red lines, but I'd think more than twice about buying a book that uses AI generated promo, even if the book and cover are 100% human creations.

@GailSpeculates Good in small amounts, or as a treat, but those refined carbohydrate foods turn the unwary into puffballs.

@Hart_Horrors I do enjoy waffles though, especially with maple syrup. I am Canadian after all.

Shared this short before, back-along, but I don’t mind repeating myself now and then (no, I’m not drunk). Remember those choose your own adventure books? This was inspired by one of those.
