If Nigerians understand how extreme the law can be they would act right. It’s a lawless country and rubbish is normalized. Nigerians act the way we do because we don’t have fear of the law.

Everyone has a right to be online and feel safe. Dispute can happen but targeted harassment/ cyberbullying is dangerous and should be a crime. Is the law not created to protect humans again?

If you feel targeted for online harassment, step away from online. Nobody is forced to be online. It makes no sense to treat virtual harassment as a serious crime when there are actual crimes, like kidnapping and banditry, that the law enforcement and the judiciary can channel their dwindling resources into fighting. A country currently facing the level of insecurity Nigeria is facing has no business wasting its paltry security/defence budget worrying about whose feelings are hurt online. Let’s be serious please.

1. A country that rehabilitates terrorists should not be jailing banger boys for 2 years.
2. The law in itself is a broad and dangerous law whose application is at the discretion of law enforcement and judges.
3. The bar for criminalising speech should be way higher.

I just think Nigerians are not used to the law working effectively in Nigeria so seeing someone actually pay for crimes is shocking to them

Defamation is very different from cyber bullying. It was the court’s decision to prosecute for cyber bullying not the claimant. He sued for defamation and was okay with the a retraction and a fine. But the court had a duty to protect the child who was the victim here. Kudos!
