@ArlingtonTravel @humantransit The faregates and emergency exits are way too short. It’s ridiculous to see folks tailgating and jumping/climbing every day to brazenly avoid paying—and there’s no penalty. Need gates that are at least 6-7 ft tall to deter.

@humantransit sad nope, we like it just like it is. Randy has dealt with fare evasion on rail with new faregates. Second, WMATA pre pandemic signed a contract that raised labor costs a lot. This contract was signed without thinking a pandemic could hit. It provided for both...

What’s so frustrating about this thread? A lot of Washington DC area transit riders would sympathize with a campaign to reduce costs so as to increase abundance. But this writer assumes that taxpayers who don’t ride are the only valid victims of any inefficiency.
Dominic Pino@DominicJPino

D.C. transit ridership has recovered from the pandemic better than most U.S. transit systems, after falling further. Yet taxpayers who don’t take the train or bus are increasingly subsidizing those who do, and it’s not sustainable. 🧵

@wmataGM @wmata Yet I just watched six people exit at Van Dorn without paying. Some climbed over, others tailgated. See this kind of stuff every single day, and no one employed at the station so much as bats an eye. How is this acceptable?? Meanwhile, some of us still pay. @AdamTuss

Great to see results in San Fran like those we have seen at @wmata. With our new gates fare evasion dropped over 80% collecting millions for better service, maintenance costs down & with other tools has resulted in the lowest crime we have ever had.
nxthompson@nxthompson

The stats here are kind of remarkable. BART's new fare gates have led to a 1,000-hour decline in clean up time; 41% drop in crime; and $10 million increase in projected revenue. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…

@Metrorailinfo @wmata @wmataGM Why is our Franconia-bound BL train stopping for several minutes between DCA and Potomac Yard?? After personally experiencing yesterday’s BL afternoon commute meltdown , I didn’t expect something like this to happen again so quickly.

@Metrorailinfo @wmata @wmataGM Hi, could you please share more info about the severity of the problem and/or expected time for delays? My ride from VA to Foggy Bottom normally takes 28 minutes. Been on this train 57 minutes this AM and still have 2 stops left.

From the same article: Still concerned. “China’s rise in the island has been quite phenomenal and it is now one of the most important economic players in Mauritius,” according to Harsh Pant, the vice president of studies at the Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi In 2019, China signed a free trade agreement with Mauritius that went into effect in 2021. A page for Mauritius on China’s Foreign Ministry website that outlines relations states that the two have a strategic partnership.

Who’s Afraid of Diego Garcia? well for starters Iran and China. This morning Real Clear Defence posted a very fast response to the latest admonition by President Trump of UK prime minister Starmer highly flawed handover of Chagos/Diego Garcia to Mauritius. The opinion article asserts three reasons as to why this deal should go forward - and each is wrong. 1. That the criticisms of this deal are driven by British conservatives for political ends only - misses the point that transferring sovereignty of Chagos/Diego Garcia was resisted in past Democrat and Republican administrations. 2. That the US and UK would continue to have access to the base - not stating that Mauritius would be informed of military operations ostensibly providing the info to third parties (ie China, Iran…), and assuming UK and Mauritius honor the terms to include annual payments to sustain said access - the US having no recourse per the deal in such case. 3. That Mauritius is not a client state of China - well neither is Iran nor Cambodia but yet they align deeply as does Mauritius with China. A high rate of UN votes by Mauritius go along with China’s wishes as many beneficiaries of Chinese largess (or debt diplomacy), is a conduit for BRI funds to Africa (while not a direct recipient of Chinese BRI money or projects), large mainland Chinese diaspore present. In sum, lots of mainland Chinese presence in Mauritius and ties to Beijing that helps to align Beijing and Mauritius national interests. Deal is bad, should not be pursued ever. realcleardefense.com/articles/2026/…

@FlyFrontier Just landed in ATL on Frontier, only to be told we can’t pull into our gate and deplane for another 45 minutes — because another plane (F9 3045) is occupying our gate. What the heck??

Not a word from the operator (on a crowded rush hour train) about specifics of what was going on. Only the unhelpful recording that a train was in the station ahead.
