Agents are now hitting a new roadblock! And it's not due to compute, memory, or LLMs! We spent decades designing APIs for developers who read docs, understand context, and can improvise when things break. However, AI agents can't do any of that. They need perfect consistency, machine-readable everything, and zero ambiguity. So most APIs that were originally designed for humans are now terrible for AI consumption. And this gap is already becoming everyone's problem since AI Agents are now the primary API consumers. @getpostman has released an API Maturity Assessment that solves this, and they are working with me today on this post to share what it entails. It shows exactly where you stand across 6 critical dimensions: - Impact: Are APIs actually driving business outcomes? - Discoverability: Can Agents even find your APIs, let alone use them effectively? - Quality: Do you have automated checks that catch issues before an Agent hammers your system? - Governance: Is there a consistent structure that machines can understand? - Security: Can you handle AI agents making 1000x more calls than humans? - AI Readiness: Can machines consume your APIs as easily as humans? The assessment takes 5 minutes and shows you exactly where the gaps are. What's interesting is how it connects API maturity directly to AI readiness. It's not just about having good APIs anymore. Instead, it's about having APIs that can be consumed, understood, and leveraged by the next generation of AI systems. Most teams I talk to think they're ready because they have "good documentation."
