Say you have £100M net worth. The proposed wealth tax is 2% on assets over £10M… so you’d owe £1.8M every year in additional taxes. To pay the additional £1.8M each year (2% on £90M) you would need to pay a £4M dividend. Of that £4M dividend, you get zero ALL of it is tax (see calculation below). Given that most scalable assets pay less than 4% yield as it is, there is no point in owning UK assets. Especially because you’d also be paying tax to buy the assets, to employ people to run the assets and you’d be losing CGT or IHT if you sell them or die. All serious investment would dry up and the economy becomes a backwater, stagnant economic wasteland rapidly.

People always skip the calculations in the RENT vs BUY debate🏠 🇬🇧 Let’s run the numbers on a £400,000 UK property. 10% deposit, 5.25% interest rate, 30-year mortgage. Monthly repayment: around £1,990. Total paid over 30 years: ~£716,000. With £356,000 of that pure interest. Renting the same place at £2,600 per month? You’d end up spending roughly £220,000+ more out of pocket than the full cost of buying (mortgage + interest). Historically, UK house prices have grown around 3-5% annually on average. That property could be worth £970k to £1.7 million+ in 30 years. Yet some still insist renting is the smarter move… while your payments build someone else’s wealth and retirement fund. Buy = equity + potential growth. Rent = expensive flexibility with zero ownership at the end. What do you think? Anything to add? Rent or buy?

@tomcron @DavidDack I generally run outside, typically 25km a week (5 x 5km), normal pace 5:10/km. This time of year I have no choice than to use the treadmill. It doesn’t negatively affect my outdoor pace or fitness.

AN APOLOGY I was seriously wrong and insensitive in one of the several media appearances I made yesterday in reaction to the death of Ann Widdecombe. I got the timing and tone of my initial word portrait of her wrong. Of course I shared, and share, the horror at her murder and the respect for her remarkable and feisty political career. I also know that many people loved her for her subsequent showbiz stardom. Her untimely death is a horrible thing. My mistaken view was that in the context of rolling news coverage, I was being asked to contribute as an obituarist who has known her and interacted with her since the 1980s. This approach was premature. At no point was I expressing my personal feelings about her, that's not what I do. I was discussing her life in the round, based on the record of known facts and what she has said about herself, along with some recollections of our personal interactions. My choice of words on the spur of the moment was clumsy. I did not intend to offend though obviously I did.

Every "UFO video" is grainy for a reason: the moment the footage is clear, the mystery vanishes and it's obviously just a drone, balloon, or plane. ​Statistically, I believe life exists outside Earth. I just don't believe any of these videos show it.
