@akamaozu @felixge @nateberkopec Then how do you check if 500k records you're serving from cache are stale and need to be refreshed? Who is instantiating 500k records from the DB? You're more than likely paginating through a large set any way, and if you're paginating, you're also ordering in the DB!

@felixge @nateberkopec but you don't have to get the 500k on request you can cache them in-memory so requests can be served without touching db

A database call costs at least 1 millisecond, mostly in network and CPU execution. Consider how much your language can do in 1 millisecond. For example, Ruby can sort an array of about 500,000 elements in that amount of time. It's not always faster to go to the database.

Anyone else have PostgreSQL queries slow to a crawl due to hitting the work_mem limit? Is there a way to be notified when close to the limit to prevent it taking down production?
