PFD Hazardous Materials Taskforce 01

Our first priority remains safety for our crews and our community, and dignity for the victims. Demolition at the garage collapse site will begin early Saturday morning as our teams continue careful, deliberate work and begin the recovery for the workers still inside. As work begins, neighbors in the surrounding blocks may see dust. Masks are not required, but those with sensitivities may consider an N95. We will gather Saturday at 10 a.m. at Vare Recreation Center to share updates and support one another. Please continue to keep the affected families in your prayers.

Busy week between training and the fire ground!

Congratulations to Captain Oliver McDonagh! Last night was his last LT shift at L19/D. We hate to see him go, but the PFD is better off within the Captain ranks with him. Bravo!

Totally RAD dude! E60 & L19/D guys did some impromptu radiation survey training with meters and isotope identifiers. This was before a solid meal in celebration of Captain (select) McDonagh’s last night at L19/D.

Another great day of training. HMTF01, SQ47, & B01 setup a “technical Decon” corridor today as an annual check of equipment that is high risk, low frequency of use.

Members trained on hazard based PPE selection this evening. Different garments and respiratory protection used at HMTF01.

Members trained on entry team tactics today. A suspicious package with details injected during the scene size-up phase dictated what meters/PPE would be utilized. Members “synced” their baseline reading prior to donning all PPE and making entry.

Members completed training on our handheld explosives detector today. This equipment provides us capability to identify or rule out the presence of explosive materials at the trace level. Several new Technicians captured the knowledge & experience of those who came before
