5 years. 5 years is longer than a college degree. Longer than my last car lease. Longer than my son’s life! 5 years of choosing myself. Choosing my family. Choosing to be in the moment. Choosing to accept things for what they are. Choosing not to escape. What is 5 years really? It’s just a measure of time. No different than 4 years or 30 years. But for some reason 5 years feels different. I’m choosing to acknowledge it not because I want a congrats or a slap on the back but because 5 years and 1 day ago I never thought this could be possible. It would have felt like an eternity. Everyone has different rock bottoms. I never lost it all. Never went to rehab. But got to a point where continuing what I was doing meant those things may have happened. It doesn’t really matter why or how just that you find a way to change course. To anyone who is struggling right now, reach out. To me, to a friend, to family, even a co-worker. Make connections because you are not alone. Help is just a phone call, text, or DM away. 5 years sober.
