Today is the birthday of a man everyone in the world should thank yet hardly anyone knows. Richard Trevithick was born on April 13th 1771 at Penhallick Vean Farmhouse opposite the old entrance to South Crofty. On Christmas Eve in 1801 he successfully harnessed high pressure steam for the first steam carriage to propel it up Camborne Hill. In 1803 the 'New Castle' was built by him, the first locomotive to do actual work. In 1805 he adapted his high pressure steam engine to drive an iron rolling mill and propel a barge with the aid of paddles. In 1806 his engine also propelled the first steam dredger and a farm threshing machine. Richard Trevithick died in Dartford, Kent on April 22nd 1833 a poor man. He was a Cornish Giant in both stature and achievement. Camborne celebrates his life of achievements on Trevithick Day which is being held this year on Saturday April 25th 2026 in Camborne, Cornwall. #BringHimHome

At 65, I still honor the upbringing my mother and grandmother gave me in the 60s. I still say "please." I still say "thank you." I still say "you're welcome." I still say "God bless you" when someone sneezes. I still hold the door open for whoever is behind me. I still walk on the street side of the sidewalk when accompanying a woman. I still offer my seat to the elderly or anyone carrying heavy bags. I still offer to carry packages for women and the elderly. I still say "excuse me" when passing or bumping into someone. I still keep my word. I’m punctual to a fault so I never keep people waiting. I answer any and all text messages. I speak to strangers at or on the elevator. I don't ignore people when they speak to me - even bums. I'm polite to everyone I engage with. AND I still live by the Golden Rule: TREAT OTHERS AS YOU'D WISH TO BE TREATED. They aren't "outdated relics." They're the glue that holds our society together. And I'll keep doing them until the day I die. Who's with me?

Surely if net zero was all about saving the planet we would stop importing fruit, veg & meat & stock & buy seasonal home grown only. Unless net zero isn’t really about saving the planet 🤔

Well everyone, I'm off to Turkey for a 5* all inclusive holiday on Wednesday. It's not cheap but as a pensioner, I've earned it. These pretend political commentators like Reem Ibrahim, Peter Barnes and Benedict Spence can weep and wail all they like about the state pension and triple lock but these wet wipes wouldn't have lasted a week walking in my shoes in the 1970s and 1980s - one full time job, one part time job, part time at college, living in a rented bedsit, all with a baby and not much food. Unless you class a bit of toast done on a two bar electric fire as dinner. So I'm going to have a fabulous time in Turkey on my pension. And when I get back, hopefully I'll be ready to exchange contracts on the house I'm upsizing to. And by the time I've finished with it, it'll have new decor, carpets and furniture. I'm hoping it'll all be done by the end of November so I can spend the whole of December in Tenerife. Because I deserve it. Because I'm worth it. Like all pensioners of my generation and older. We were grafters. These young ones could learn a lot from us instead of disrespecting us. But in the meantime, I'm living my life and loving every minute. Suck it up, Spence, Barnes and Ibrahim. And do some real bloody work!
