Sometimes, in driving change, you can’t afford to be purist. You may have to cut a deal to kickstart the reforms while keeping your eyes firmly on the prize. Politicians will always be politicians. You can’t solve everything technically. In a dysfunctional system with great power imbalance skewed against the citizen, you may need to find a way to accommodate their interests in the short term until they get used to a better way of doing things. As a reformer, don’t get stuck on “It’s my way or the highway.” They have the power to ensure that it will always be the highway and you don’t have the power to ensure that it will be your way. You may need to find a way to accommodate their interests or fears without rewarding bad behaviour, destroying institutions or breaking the law. The alternatives are to resign and leave government bitter or to run for elective office yourself. I am Ezemmuo. I know things.

The chief driver of public debate, public opinion, and even culture in Nigeria is poverty. It is why it is impossible to have any kind of sensible public debate without it devolving into insults, clear sabotage even by those who stand to lose the most, and a complete muddying of the waters. It is why you cannot clearly tell what ethics or morality is in Nigeria. Because everything is driven by what the people involved are getting or hope to get. And of course this poverty driven public discourse and culture is not driven by poor people but by people who have the fear of poverty, of losing human dignity which can only be bought with money in Nigeria. The people afraid of poverty are more dangerous than those who are actually poor. It is those people who will travel abroad and see a functional electricity grid and come back home and ask you all to install solar panels to escape the reality. They are the ones who will take photos of themselves walking freely or even cycling through safe streets abroad and come home to praise idiot politicians for building one substandard road with no sidewalk, no bicycle lane. They are the ones who will enjoy liberties abroad and talk of how it is ok for a governor to commit small genocides if he is renovating primary schools with zinc roofs. They are the ones who will enjoy human rights abroad then come home and use the police to settle personal scores. Nigeria doesn't suffer from bad leaders alone. The culture is rotten to the core. And so public life is full of violence, greed, fraud and crime of every shade, across every layer of society.

When I was still just friends with my now wife, there was another guy in the picture. He had the SUV. He had more money. His future looked brighter than mine. Me? I was driving a tired 90s white Camry, grinding, moving up and down every weekend, doing work that took a lot out of me and paid almost nothing. But she still chose me. Not because I had more. I did not. Not because I looked like the safer option. I was not. She chose me because of the things money cannot fake for long. Kindness. How I treated people. How I moved with everybody, no matter their class. How I spoke to people others looked down on. How I carried myself when there was no audience, no applause, and nothing to gain. I believe she saw potential too. She saw something ahead of me before I fully stepped into it myself. And that matters to me. Because she stood by me when life was not soft. She stood by me when effort was high and reward was low. She stood by me when nothing around me looked impressive. And even when I proposed, it was not some polished fairytale moment. I did not go down on one knee. I did not have the perfect setup. In fact, she was at one of her highest points of anger. And she still said yes. That kind of thing will humble a man if he has sense. So men, hear me clearly... When a woman stays with you at your lowest, do not rise later and make her feel like she was just part of your struggle story. Do not get to the top and suddenly start acting like she is replaceable. Some women come when the table is full. Some women sit with you when the table is empty. The woman who believed in you when life gave you no shine, no comfort, and no guarantees... that is not the woman you make feel second. And to younger men Be kind now. Not when money comes. Not when status comes. Now!!!
Mazi Nathan@rukky_nate

any woman can be replaced. but a woman who stood by you when you had nothing. a woman who supported and encouraged you at your lowest. a woman who chose you over other men. that’s probable the kind of woman you don’t want to replace.

Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada spoke about the contradictions of human nature: “Some people dream of having a swimming pool at home, while those who have one hardly ever use it. Those who have lost a loved one feel a profound sense of loss, while others often complain about their living relatives. Those without a partner long for one, while those who have one often don't appreciate it. The hungry would give anything for a meal, while the satiated complain about the taste of their food. Those without a car dream of owning one, while those who have a car are always looking for a better one.” The key to happiness is gratitude: truly seeing and appreciating what we already have, and understanding that somewhere, someone would give anything for what we take for granted.

Whoever feeds you can starve you. That is not a threat, it is a principle. If one person, one company, one client, or one opportunity is the only source of what you need, they already have more power over your life than you think. The moment they pull back, you are stuck. The moment they leave, you are lost. Dependence always looks like loyalty until it does not. This is why you build. This is why you diversify. This is why you never let your entire future sit in somebody else’s hands. Grow your own table. Create your own options. The goal is not to be ungrateful, it is to be uncontrollable. Nobody should have the power to starve you simply because they once fed you.

Can I tell you for free? He’s not surviving. He’s thriving. He’s enjoying himself. This is EXACTLY what he wants. This is what success means for Tinubu. We are the ones assuming he’s feeling bad to make ourselves fell good. Tinubu has NO conscience. He’s dead inside.
Chisom Agbafor@ChisomAgbafor

I wonder how Tinubu survives mentally. Curses from the North, South, East, West. Frustration from every citizen. And he still wants another 4 years. His mental endurance should be studied.

If you take a deep look at what’s happening around the world right now, a very sublime truth becomes clear; Leadership, at the national level, more than any other, is an existential issue for every country or nation. If geopolitical events don’t do it for you, go and watch Natgeo Wild… Even amongst animals, only the most capable are allowed to lead…the very survival of the herd, pack…whatever, depends on it. Fellow Nigerians….your move.

Nothing has contributed more to the docility, selfishness, and extreme individualism we see in Nigeria today than Nigerian pastors. For decades many of them have trained people to look inward instead of outward. Everything is about personal breakthrough, personal blessing, personal protection, personal prosperity. Very little is said about civic responsibility, justice, accountability, or standing up for the vulnerable. A society cannot build a healthy collective culture when its most influential voices constantly preach survival and personal miracles instead of duty to one another. So people retreat into themselves. Pray for yourself. Protect your own. Secure your own breakthrough. And slowly the idea of community, sacrifice, and shared responsibility disappears. If you train millions of people to believe that every problem is spiritual and every solution is personal prayer, you should not be surprised when those same people become passive in the face of real world problems.

Here is the thing: the reason Daniel is not ashamed to share this train wreck of an interview is that he knows that Nigeria does not reward ethics. It does not reward shame. Nigeria is where shame goes to die. Nigeria does not reward morality. The only crime in Nigeria is poverty. And so he works for his supper the only way he knows how. This interview will do nothing to dent his already battered image. Just like Tolu Ogunlesi. Who insulted you over seedless grapes. Just like Reuben Abati during Jonathan. This too shall pass and Nigerians will forget and he will one day win elections in his local government and become a Federal Representative or Senator. Or become a well paid commentator. Daniel as odious as he is, is only a mirror of what Nigeria allows. He will be fine. His children will be fine. And he will never lack friends in and outside government.

Two cultural shocks that I got when I first landed in Germany were: 1. The high number of smokers, both young and old. 2. The high rate of alcohol consumption in Germany. In fact, Bavaria (Bayern) has the highest breweries per square meter in the whole world. There are over 600 breweries in Bavaria alone. Borno State, Nigeria (70,898 km²) is slightly bigger than Bavaria (70,550 km²). While terrorism has ravaged Borno State and other parts of Nigeria, Bavaria and Germany in general is one of the safest place to live on earth. Can someone please ask @nafdacnigeria @DGatNAFDAC how she became a professor but can't critically analyze data? How come despite the high density of breweries in Germany, there is no "banditary" in that country? Shouldn't Germany be the more terrorized country?
