This might be a good occasion to remind you that I've mostly moved to Mastodon some time ago and you might want to follow me there 🙃 @piegames" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">flausch.social/@piegames

@armando1987dim @the_aiju It's not a hard rule, but I think every directory should have a reason for its existence, to justify its navigation overhead. Reasons for me would be "there are *many* subprojects", or "they share a shell.nix" or "I have to execute commands from that directory"

@armando1987dim @the_aiju Most of the time, categories are fuzzy and break down at edge cases. And people tend to make overly deep hierarchies, with only a couple of elements on each level. (Compare the Rust module system with Java's packages for example)

i’m curious if people have advice for organising computing environments. my file system always ends up as a mess of random files and it becomes difficult to find stuff eventually + difficult to do backups bc everything is intermingled so much

@the_aiju Then, have one folder per project, keep fs hierarchies flat (don't group related independent projects, except for true sub-projects), never ever reference a sibling project with .. (use submodules instead if necessary)

@the_aiju Do you want to optimize for learning or optimize for fun? If it's the former, then why does it compete with video games in your brain? If it's the latter, you should like *doing* the project regardless of its outcome (which includes how much you'll learn)

the problem i have is that i can think of other projects that would involve more learning and i kinda cant decide which one i want to do :\
Yishan@yishan

@the_aiju I employ a hack where I remember that any useless/silly project that’s difficult or complex results in me learning something even if the end result is not super impressive.

@the_aiju It depends on what you want to use it for: If you want to use LLMs for automation purposes rather (which people want to do) than for personal assistance with a human in the loop, you better judge it on the worst-case scenarios.

@the_aiju Can we maybe find a framing that is both useful yet also acknowledges it as an LLM without humanizing it?

@the_aiju You want a client where you can configure an allow list of CWs. (Also always showing CW'd content is totally a valid option)

content warnings on fedi seem basically useless for me because people will put a content warning on literally anything so i just end up having the “always show content even when it has a content warning” setting turned on, kinda defeats the point imo

@the_aiju Either the companies would become extremely stifled (tbh they already are), or CEO would become an ejection-seat position occupied by marionettes where the actual decision makers keep themselves in the background.

@the_aiju Honestly I still prefer threads over long posts even on Mastodon. I really like the idea that it is chunked and you can like/retweet/reply to individual bits instead of the whole.

like, fedi has long toots and i dont think it has any of the pathologies that twitter people are afraid of? people still mostly make short posts.

@__alula @the_aiju @signalapp @telegram I'm sorry but it *is* a big deal even though most people don't know/care. But the real issue here is that Telegram's encrypted chats have worse UX than everything else. I'd prefer *WhatsApp* over that.

@the_aiju Easy to test theory: it predicts that you'll love Rachmaninoff youtube.com/watch?v=0uA8k-… (I also recommend having a look at one of the score following videos for that one)

the ping-pong song if you're curious :) idk why but the transitions are really magical to me... probably just further evidence for my theory of "good music is when accidentals and the more accidentals the gooder it is" idk i dont know anything about music youtube.com/watch?v=9LDe0g…
