@chairmanxxx @SustainableTall (BTW I was just nitpicking, I don't actually mean to imply there aren't any reasons to care whether other people's cars are in garages--though the sane thing to do would be require people to have a garage *in order to buy a car*, as IIRC they do in Japan)

@chairmanxxx @SustainableTall Those are reasons why you want *your own* car to be in a garage -- but in order to legally mandate houses other than your own to have garages you need reasons to care about whether *other people's* cars are in garages (also, "snowing"? "Ice cold"? In Adelaide?)

1. Garages should be optional, not default 2. Garages should not be mandated 3. People should be allowed to run small boutique businesses out of their existing garages: haircuts, coffee shop, plants, art, crafts, etc. Which would you rather have or walk by in your neighborhood?

@xsphi I have a suspicion that if both of you tabooed the phrase "ignore bad vibes" and described in detail concrete examples of the situations you mean and your reactions to them, you would find they hardly resembled each other at all

@ESYudkowsky If he owned it, he would care about it much more than Soviet officials did. What are you even talking about. Also, my favorite conspiracy theory is that purpose of Chernobyl was to stop nuclear in Europe so it would continue buying Russian gas.

Watching historians dissect _Chernobyl_. Imagining Chernobyl run by some dude answerable to nobody, who took it over in a coup and converted it to a for-profit. Shall we count up how hard it would be to raise Earth's AI operations to the safety standard AT CHERNOBYL?

@pawnofcthulhu According to my parents, my kindergarten teacher once asked us "what's the smallest number" expecting us to answer 0, I answered −∞ instead, and she got angry. (of course mine wasn't a correct answer — −∞ is not a number, so the right answer would be "there isn't any" 😉)

@BoyanSlat Typically when people say "the 1%" they mean in their own country, not worldwide. The OOP does say "world's" but it's not impossible that people would overlook that.

@ESYudkowsky I'd support splitting it in two, like regular runs and TAS. One league anything goes, one league pure

@mynamebedan They believe they use potable water for evaporative cooling, and if they were right "consumption" would be a perfectly reasonable word to use, even if water molecules aren't literally broken apart or sent to outer space.

@EimileRos still nowhere near as cringe as the people who say "Eire" (without a fada) in English (or any other language other than Irish) to specifically mean the Republic of Ireland as opposed to the whole island, but still

@EimileRos OTOH we no longer call Iran Persia or Myanmar Burma, so exonyms *can* change with time. I still find Türkiye cringe, but *not* because it's also the endonym.

Türkiye is the name of the country in Turkish, with Turkish phonetics in mind. Turkey is the anglicized name of the country in English, with English phonetics in mind. We call Finland Finland, not Suomi. We call Germany Germany, not Deutschland.

@ESYudkowsky Does anyone think "fertility below replacement" is an existential threat and specifically because we will not have babies until the last human dies childless of old age? This seems like a straw man. Problems can be concerning and worth discussion without being existential.

"Fertility below replacement" is an archetypal Problem That Evolution Will Fix Automatically. Not faster than ASI timelines, but more than fast enough to avoid human extinction.
