@gimpslice That's an important question. If a search engine still provides (real!) value to a publisher's website through generative AI output, but with the AI being partly trained using the publisher's content, is that OK? Depending on the details, probably yes.

Crawlers, search engines and the sleaze of generative AI companies AI companies see the openness of the web as permitting large-scale crawling to obtain training data. So what should publishers do? Some thoughts with a lot of context #ai #seo #chatgpt searchengineland.com/crawlers-searc…

@andrea_moro @DuaneForrester Maybe they could have done better, but unlikely. The important thing is regulators are taking a very keen interest now. Let's support them doing their job.

@pierrefar @DuaneForrester Agree. It's all too new to a degree, but certainly not unexpected. What we are facing is lack of professionalism within the regulators bodies mostly. Situations like these could and should have been warned years ago, especially the one around IP

@DuaneForrester @andrea_moro That's right. OpenAI doesn't get a free pass either. There is such a lack of clarity that's causing many AI companies regulatory scrutiny in addition to publisher push back, that when a situation can be described with accuracy, we find... it's worse than feared.

@DuaneForrester Absolutely. I'm glad Google is (talking about) doing something. I lost track and count of court cases. It's an exciting and scary time!

@pierrefar Grateful you prepped this for us all, Pierre! It’s an excellent view into an important topic we’re all facing as search evolves. We cannot skip these conversations. 🙏🙏

@TideBusiness Hi. Every app update makes it more difficult to log into the website. The app is *crap* for many tasks, but these tasks are easy on the website. Stop making it harder to log into the website.

A5 🧑‍🔬 I'm experimenting with lots of cool AI tools and libraries. One fruitful approach is combining AI tools with other data sources to produce richer results, more detailed audits, or answer business questions better. #vcbuzz

A2. @pierrefar makes an essential point - human editing is vital. For example, I found completely fabricated dates and facts in a recent #BardAI trial. However, it surfaced ideas that I'd missed. I researched from there and came up with a better article. #vcbuzz
Pierre Far@pierrefar

A 🧑‍🔬 2/2 I highly recommend *against* publishing AI content without human editing, primarily for quality assurance, and also for copyright (an area of law and policy is still catching up with AI content; see, for example, U.S. Copyright Office last month #vcbuzz

@Johnny3of4 Yep. I did that a few times already this week, and in one instance it prompted (#sorrynotsorry) a discussion about whether we're underplaying a major angle about the topic. #vcbuzz
