Today, the FBI and NYPD disrupted a plot by a member of a pro-Israel terrorist organization to assassinate Nerdeen Kiswani. This is a reprehensible act of political violence. There is no place for it in our city nor our country. I am thankful Ms. Kiswani is safe and the assailant is under arrest.

I sat with young men right here on Long Island, young men carrying criminal records, yes, but also carrying determination, accountability, and a real desire to do better. They are trying. Truly trying. They want jobs. They want stability. They want a safe place to live so they can stay on the right path. But the system keeps closing doors. They struggle to find employment. They can’t secure housing. Every application becomes another reminder that redemption is harder than punishment in this country. And then I turn on the news and see millions of dollars mobilized overnight for conflict overseas. Nothing against any people or nation, human lives matter everywhere. But I can’t help asking: where is that same urgency for our own communities? If we can mobilize enormous resources abroad, why can’t we invest with equal commitment in American men of color who are fighting every day to stay out of trouble, rebuild their lives, and give back? We hear “America First” all the time. But America cannot come first while we abandon those who are actively trying to do the right thing. Real public safety is not just policing, ITS OPPORTUNITY !!! It’s housing. It’s second chances. It’s dignity. Tonight, I’m emotional because I see potential being lost not from lack of effort, but from lack of support. WE CAN AND MUST DO BETTER!!!!!!!!

The Church is not the building. The Church is the people. Scripture reminds us that God does not dwell in walls, but in hearts.
We are the living Church. Jesus himself said:
“My house shall be called a house of prayer for all people.” (Isaiah 56:7) That means welcome comes first.
Not agreement. Not perfection. Not sameness. Throughout the Bible, Jesus consistently welcomed:
• those who doubted
• those who questioned
• those who disagreed
• those who were searching
• those who were hurting Belonging was never reserved only for those who already “fit.” Faith communities are strongest when they reflect Christ’s example:
open doors, open hearts, and room for growth. The Church is not a club for the convinced.
It is a home for the seeking.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us that housing is a civil right—and that injustice is often built into systems, not caused by chance. On Long Island, housing segregation did not happen accidentally. It was shaped by deliberate public policy, including early federal lending practices and redlining that excluded entire communities from housing stability for both homeowners and tenants. These decisions left a lasting imprint on where people could live—and who had access to safe, stable housing. Today, we honor Dr. King by recognizing both this history and a hard-won local victory. After 46 years of advocacy and persistence, Matinecock Court has finally come to fruition—standing as proof that even deeply entrenched barriers can be challenged when communities refuse to give up. This milestone is more than a housing development. It represents progress toward repairing the harm caused by exclusionary policies and advancing fair housing across Long Island. As we remember Dr. King, we recommit ourselves to ensuring that housing stability—for homeowners and tenants alike—is no longer shaped by past injustices, but grounded in dignity, fairness, and opportunity for all. #MLKDay #LongIslandNY #FairHousing #HousingIsACivilRight #MatinecockCourt #HousingHelpInc #JusticeInAction

Friends, colleagues, and neighbors— I’ve been laser-focused on advocacy work in Albany since this past Sunday. It is now Wednesday, January 14, 2026, and I am still working late into the evening. I want to be honest and transparent with you. I am behind on emails, texts, messages, WhatsApp, and other inquiries. From the bottom of my heart, I ask for your patience and grace. I promise I will respond to all messages by Friday. Please know this: I see you. I have read your messages. I hear your urgency, your fear, your frustration, and your hope. Even when I cannot reply to every message immediately, your voice is not going unheard. I advocate for every Long Islander in need of housing—regardless of race, ethnicity, disability, immigration status, income, or partisan politics. Housing is a human need, not a political label. Long Island is experiencing a severe housing crisis. I am fully aware, and I am carrying your stories with me—first to Albany, and soon to Washington, D.C. Your experiences are shaping conversations in rooms many people never get access to. Tonight, at 8:56 PM, I am still working because this work matters. You matter. With gratitude, love, and deep commitment, please know that I am working for each and every one of you—our veterans, people with disabilities, single parents, young adults, low-income hardworking families, seniors, and all those struggling to secure stable housing. I cannot predict the future, but I can promise you this: I will not stop advocating for you. Even when I cannot respond right away, I am fighting for you every single day. Please know this above all else: I have your back. With gratitude and commitment, Pilar

I had the opportunity to meet with @GovKathyHochul, who took the time to listen thoughtfully to concerns affecting many people on Long Island. I am grateful for her willingness to engage. Long Island is often seen as prosperous, safe, and stable. For many, that experience is real. At the same time, opportunity is not felt equally by everyone, and when systems work well for some, it can be easy to assume they work well for all. Often, they do not. Across our region, individuals and families face housing challenges, language barriers, and access-to-justice gaps that may not always be visible, but are deeply felt. When firehouses, precincts, and courts feel unsafe to enter; when housing programs are inaccessible by design; when legal help is unavailable in the language people speak—these are not abstract policy issues. They are daily realities for our neighbors and their children. What gives me hope is that progress begins with listening. Conversations like this matter. They create space for understanding, collaboration, and solutions grounded in dignity and fairness. I remain committed to sharing what I see on the ground and to working with any elected official willing to listen—because meaningful change starts with open doors and open ears.

💪🏽 Good morning, amigos ☕Coffee first—then Albany. I’m heading up with data, lived experience, and practical solutions to tackle the housing challenges facing Long Islanders across Nassau and Suffolk. I’ll be raising urgent issues I see every day: • Rising foreclosures • Access-to-justice gaps, including language and distance barriers • Persistent inequities in affordable housing and vouchers • The need for fair-housing testing and accountability And I’m bringing solutions: • A Long Island legal access pilot modeled on a proven Philadelphia program • Practical, equity-centered ADU reforms that expand housing without burdening taxpayers These are ready-to-implement solutions that stabilize families and strengthen communities. Three days. Real data. Solutions that work. Albany—I’m ready. #SiSePuede

As the mother of a warrior princess with different abilities, I am asking every elected state representative across New York—regardless of region—to listen and act. As Gov. Kathy Hochul prepares to present the State of the State, we urge all members of the New York State Legislature to ensure that the I/DD community is not left behind. Families across every region of New York State need real commitments—not words. We are calling for a 2.7% targeted inflationary increase, meaningful workforce support, and sustained investment in infrastructure and care systems so people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can live with dignity, stability, and opportunity. Our children are strong. Our families are resilient. But resilience is not a substitute for resources. To all our state representatives: please stand with us and make I/DD funding a statewide priority. Take action and contact your legislator! #InvestInMe #InvestInUsSee this Instagram video by @the_college_experience instagram.com/reel/DTOILdUiC…

To my friends and allies on the left in the United States: I ask this with humility and care: let’s slow down before rushing to conclusions about Venezuela. There is a tenacity among some Americans—well-intentioned, I believe—to assume we know what is best for Venezuela better than Venezuelans themselves. That assumption deserves gentle but honest reflection. For more than 25 years, Venezuelans have lived under repression, with their civil rights violated and their futures constrained under Nicolás Maduro. Over 8 million people were forced to flee, many not to wealthy countries, but to other under-resourced nations across Latin America, including my birth country, Peru. The human cost has been enormous. This moment is uncomfortable for many of us—because it involves Donald Trump. But bridge-building requires honesty: credit where credit is due. This time, the United States did the right thing—and many Venezuelans agree with Trump and are openly grateful for this action. This is not about oil or geopolitics. Every Venezuelan I have spoken to says the same thing: it is about freedom—a freedom many of us are privileged to take for granted. Solidarity does not mean filtering other people’s suffering through our own political discomfort. Solidarity means listening—especially when those most affected are expressing relief, hope, and cautious celebration. We don’t have to abandon our values to pause, observe, and have compassion. Let’s wait. Let’s listen. Let’s lead with empathy. True solidarity begins when we listen to people living the reality—not when we project our politics onto their pain.
