one thing you gotta give jay-z is he did it all by simply rapping extremely well which is something you cant say about his semi melodic contemporaries like wayne and drake or a semi melodic rapper-producer like kanye, singing gets you a lot of points in commercial music

A huge part of his impact came from taking that job as an exec at Def Jam. He stepped on his competitions roll outs and gave himself and his artists better marketing

I think I realized why Drake fans are so obsessed with slandering Jay-Z. I think it comes from a place of wanting to replace Hov’s cultural and historic ties to the genre with Drake and rebuild the genre in Drake’s image. What makes people like Hov, Nas, Tupac, Big, etc., important to the overall canon of Hip-Hop culture and rap music is their ties to the street, their penmanship, and bodies of work. Hov is still the largest representative of the genre, given he is the only rapper to have commercial and cultural influence in four different decades. By revising Jay-Z’s history and impact on the genre, it creates a shaky foundation in order to install their favorite artists as the face of the genre.
