see i don't think rachel reid was writing shane as the villain but i do think she is careless when it comes to him. saying he’s the best player and then refusing to show us his big moments, the belittling way she wrote him in tlg, the way she talks abt his leadership skills…

@mokathethird People pnt out Ilya lost a lot going to Ottwa. Bt Shane suggested and he made an active choice.Shane may have gone as a free agent too? Bt that's after a horrific public fallout w/ his team and fans in Montreal and taking a big hit on his reputation.He had the illusion of choice.

@mokathethird This, exactly. It's never been about Ilya and his skills OR taking away from him. It's all about the gradual set up to Shane being second fiddle in a way, kind of unintentionally possibly because of the way they got him to Ottawa.

I think people misinterpret the problem with this captaincy thing. Of course ilya gonna be the captain. He knows the team and that's what captains is for but the way rr talks about it seems dismissive towards years of ambition she put into shane's character

@hudkahlua No comment on the RR aspect, but even if Shane was still competitive, I can see Ilya keeping Captaincy because "Shane sees him doing well in the job and he's happy". Which, honestly, I kind of hope not 😭 But narratively, I don't see y they would switch the C from Ilya to Shane😭

does rachel reid even understand shane hollander anymore, if she ever did because how would that man be ok not being captain like is she saying marriage took the competition out of him

@fujobritta I feel like if Shane went to Ottawa without burning bridges with Montreal... that would have been nice. I wish his teammates were normal and not what they ended up being so unanimously. 😔

if hypothetically they never got outed and shane ended up going to ottawa anyways cause of the environment in montreal i think hollanov wouldve been such elite tier gcu!hrpf for a solid while before they officially came out

Every time Rachel Reid talks, it feels like she takes everything that matters to Shane & hands it to Ilya. As an Asian reader, it’s honestly exhausting to watch such a strong character get constantly diminished. She clearly doesn’t understand him and it shows. Hudson, Good luck!

echoing others saying this, but this series does not erase the success of the regular season. suddenly everyone is too old and not talented enough when a few weeks ago that wasn’t the narrative. and i’m tired of geno catching strays when he’s a point per game in this series

@Steph190891 I can vibe with that honestly, "stupid" can be "makes bad choices/have common sense lapses". At least can give her the benefit of the doubt. But like at least let Shane keep the things (if she ever thought there was any) he's good at. Give him his hockey! 😫

@pinggwinbear yeah, it’s Ilya’s POV and he’s unreliable, but she also just doesn’t know how to write Shane. at this point it feels intentional, like dimming him down to make Ilya shine...writing a character as a lead just to shit on him is so weird!

@Steph190891 I don't have an objection to this read. If you pair it with what we're shown it fits. My thing is that it puts Shane in a bad light. Think of how if there was discourse & the counter-argument was yeah but if you put it that way, he comes off as stupid. This is how I feel about it

@pinggwinbear I can believe most of his team being jealous, they liked him but he was never really “one of them.” And Shane not picking up on it, taking everything at face value, that tracks too. That’s exactly why it needed more depth.

@Steph190891 Honestly, this is what I feel about it all. I came into the books and saw a cool rivalry where they take turns outdoing each other and then 2nd book was like, Ilya smokes and eats junk food but still outruns Shane. And Shane sucks at coaching but Ilya is awesome at it!

@Steph190891 Like without reading into it, it's cool plot development. But just... I feel like it's at Shane's expense as a character. And we don't even see any exploration of that in TLG. 😔
