@pinkseobin @peachylian Comparing Cassandra Clare to Tolkien is a nightmare. There are published danmei novels that are closer to Tolkien than Clare can't ever dream to be but at least it's still a fantasy conversation. Talking about Han Kang is meaningless since it's a completely different genre.

@dappernines @peachylian I agree with you but I was only talking about what op meant in the tweet. Danmei is still an up and coming field and it's commercial viability is probably the biggest factor influencing writing standards rn. You can't expect someone with a 9-5 job to write like Shakespeare

@pinkseobin @peachylian your take has no nuance. there are bad danmeis and there are good danmeis, just as with any other genre of book. you’re generalising all danmei. i’ve read some i considered to be pretty bad, and then some that genuinely changed my life; it depends on the author and translation.
