“So the number of employees who run the park and serve visitors has PLUMMETED from about 1,151 to about 1,140, with NPS staffing falling from about 451 to about 440. It’s like we don’t even have a national park there anymore, Hitler Hitler Hitler. Eleven actual employees have been laid off, in a savage Nazi assault on the very concept of public parks. These numbers show that Yosemite National Park has been ruined, and everything has gone straight to hell, and the park is under attack.” chrisbray.substack.com/p/writhing-in-…

A group of frustrated Yosemite National Park staffers hoping to draw attention to the federal government’s sweeping workforce cuts hung an upside-down American flag thousands of feet off the ground on the side of El Capitan on Saturday. 📸: Tracy Barbutes

@NYPDnews Why don't you call off the search for this guy, and find the guy who killed Richard Henderson in cold blood on the subway, huh?

🚨UPDATE: Below are photos of a person of interest wanted for questioning regarding the Midtown Manhattan homicide on Dec. 4. This does not appear to be a random act of violence; all indications are that it was a premediated, targeted attack. The full investigative efforts of the NYPD are continuing, and we are asking for the public’s help—if you have any information about this case, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). There is a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

@NateSilver538 she would have ran the party line. but given the direction that the democratic party has been going in this only worsened my fears

Personally, I think Harris would have governed more like Biden or Obama than her left-wing 2019/2020 campaign. Mostly (like Biden) she's a party-line Dem following the currents, not blazing her own trail. But it's just a guess! There was no credible commitment in any direction.

We've all encountered situations where someone promises a behavioral change and it doesn't happen, and common sense says to be skeptical. Voters were reasonable not to buy Harris's "pivot to the center" given that she made no substantive commitments and offered no rationale.

@AlecStapp this is the kind of brainrot that infects cali politics. it's like no one in charge has heard of supply and demand. they stymie the only development that is possible, while making it more expensive and difficult all the time

7. Drought is another major problem in California. But a regulator recently rejected a proposal for a desalination plant that would have provided 50 million gallons of drinking water per day. They said the water would be “too expensive for low-income consumers.”

1. There have been warning signs for years that many blue state policies aren't working. Especially because states like California make it really difficult to build anything. Here's a thread with some data... 🧵

@AlecStapp in a nutshell why I voted republican this year as a registered democrat. dems talk the talk but can't walk the walk. and cali still considers itself a leader in environmental consideration and clean energy, it's a complete joke

Since this election is settled this hopefully won't take on too much of a partisan valence but can we just agree it's ridiculous that it takes California several weeks to count its votes? Imagine if it were a swing state.

@NateSilver538 the takes from Dems on why they lost so badly really drives home how out of touch they are with the majority of Americans at this point

@mattyglesias i worry about the fate of Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel under Trump. at the same time Dems were going to lose those with their weakness and ineptitude anyways

@Empty_America why does it follow that a child should be subject to their parent well into adulthood? mature parents should respect their children's autonomy. if they don't then a multi-generational structure would definitely be miserable

Some of the absolute most miserable people I have ever know were farmers stuck in "multi-generational" situations. Like a 50-year-old son with his 75-year-old dad calling the shots. My observed reality does not correlate with on-line theories about all this stuff.
Juniper@adesertdryad

I left home for a reason. As much as I love my parents and have a good relationship with them, I didn't want to remain subject to them, which is what those community arrangements entail. Do you want to be subject to your father as head of the family for your adult life?

@DanielStrTowns there is too much liberal ideology that i don't align with. i'm not a liberal. there is too much conservative ideology that i don't align with. i'm not a conservative. i'm a realist. and partisans love detaching from reality, so i will never fit nicely into either category

As a lifelong progressive / leftist / sorta heterodox leftist (depending on at what point in life you asked me), it's always disorienting when people inform me that I'm secretly a conservative, or that ideas I believe strongly in are actually right-wing. currentaffairs.org/2023/09/the-st…
