🚨 The DA welcomes the sentencing of Julius Malema for the illegal use of a firearm in public. Gun violence is out of control in SA, so any crime involving illegal gunfire is extremely serious. This sentencing sends a clear message that in South Africa nobody is above the law.

I have to say... five years seems like overkill for Malema for the crime in question, especially given it pushes him out of parliament. Kinda feels like we're trying to nail him for other crimes that are harder to prove, like corruption. In France, people are reluctant to jail Marie Le Pen, a right wing populist, for much worse crimes because it'll prevent her from running for president and be seen as affecting voters' choice and more importantly... turning her into a "martyr" against "the system," potentially strengthening the far-right's popularity. That's what we're risking with Malema here, galvanising an otherwise flagging EFF base.

No one is above the law! Bringing law and order to South Africa must be our top priority. Gun violence is out of control in SA, so any illegal firearms crime should be taken extremely seriously. I welcome the sentencing of Julius Malema. This is how we must restore faith in our criminal justice system ✅

We don't need a white government. We don't need a black government. We need a COMPETENT government. Forget race. Forget loyalty to failing parties. Do it for the child who can't find work.

The energy in Budapest tonight is absolutely incredible. Unlike anything I’ve seen anywhere in the world. Every bridge, metro station and street is full of celebration. Literally the entire city.

The Gautrain is amazing. It comes a little too infrequently but I guess that’s a function of demand. But a beautiful service.

The most important take-away for me: GROWTH is (back) on the agenda. Excellent news - excited to see how this unfolds. And congratulations @geordinhl - clearly a decent and highly capable leader.

🚫 Do not be fooled by small parties. They promise change before elections, then keep the ANC in power afterwards. In Tshwane, they blocked progress and handed the city back. To fix this, the DA must grow stronger. 🗳️ Register to vote for a DA government: check.da.org.za 📣 #DAcongress2026

The problem for the ANC is that it has set up a procurement framework that incentivizes corruption and underpins that corruption with a sort of self-righteous entitlement. The upshot is a culture of incompetence and thievery. It can’t be fixed by a few different hires. The ANC needs to go.

Looking at this picture reminds me of that invention, though I cannot quite remember the name. Here you have individual engine things each pulling single cargo things. Now imagine one very strong engine thing pulling hundreds of cargo things, and then putting that long power-engine-cargo-thing on its very own special highway that stretches hundreds of kilometres. Mindblowing. Why don't we have those things?

Why Socialism Doesn't Work, Explained for a 10-Year-Old. You're in a class of 30 students. One kid works like crazy and gets an 18 average. Another does nothing and gets a 4. The teacher decides it's unfair and gives everyone the class average: 11. The one who had 18 stops working. Why bother if it changes nothing? The one who had 4 keeps doing nothing. Why work if you're handed 11 for free? The next year the class average is 7. Then 5. Then 3. The teacher doesn't get it. He thinks the problem is that the students aren't supportive enough of each other. So he starts punishing those who don't put in enough effort. He monitors everyone. He decides who studies what. He bans switching classes. That's exactly what happened. Every time. In every country. No exceptions. USSR, China, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, Cambodia, Ethiopia, East Germany. 40 attempts. Same result. Every time. Socialism punishes those who produce and rewards those who don't. Everyone ends up producing nothing. And when no one's producing anymore, the government uses force to make people work. It's not an accident. It's the design. - @brivael
