The cortex is filled with excitatory local synapses, but we know little about their role in brain function. New experimental tools, along with ideas from artificial intelligence, are poised to change that. By @HistedLab thetransmitter.org/neural-network…

New preprint, on 'sequence filtering'. Led by @CianaDeveau, Z Zhou. We see this as a key step forw on how cortex works. All cortical areas have dense exc-exc recurrent connectivity. What do these connections do, esp in sensory ctx? Our data say: they do dynamics/time. 1/4

Tough times in the world right now, but will share this: If you're attending SFN in DC this wknd, we have 2 posters on Sat I'm excited about. @pklafosse is presenting work on activation functions in cortical neurons,& @CianaDeveau on cortical recurrent nets 'doing sequences.'1/2

🧠🚨: Our latest paper is out today in @NeuroCellPress! Led by @JonORawe, we show salt-and-pepper excitation& suppression in mouse V1 arises from purely exc opto input. That means the excit-excit recurrent connections in cortex change how neurons respond to input. 1/3

Details of House-proposed cuts for 2024 fiscal yr: NIH 6.2% ⬇️ Including: NIGMS 2.6% ⬇️ NCI 2.9% ⬇️ NIAID 22.9% !!⬇️ ascb.org/science-policy… Worried? Call/email your House rep to let them know! The Senate budget included 2.4% ⬆️ for NIH, far preferable.
Rebecca Pompano@PompanoLab

@Jie_Immunology It's so sad. NIAID was specifically targeted for extra cuts in the version of the federal budget put forward by the House (specifically by the few far right Republicans in control there). Support for NIH funding has been bipartisan for many years until now.

Sharing new preprint from our lab: @biorxiv_neursci. Led by @pklafosse, we show neurons in the awake🧠can filter out inputs: attenuation-by-suppression. Also: real neurons’ activation function share features w/ #ai systems (eg ChatGPT). #neuroscience Comments welcome! 1/15

Thrilled to share my first first-author paper, published today in @eLife. Thank you, thank you to my amazing co-authors in the @HistedLab for all their effort and wisdom 🌟
Mark Histed@HistedLab

This is now published at @eLife. Summary: It's not just V1 needed to do this task, which is about as simple as tasks get. V2 is needed as well. →V2 (LM) seems to carry sensory representations, so... does the brain simultaneously read out all representations available?

now with video! the neural subnetworks you see in this behaving animal are a new discovery and a big clue about how these distributed, growing nerve nets wire up and function. Powerful transgenic neuroscience tools open the door for lots of new biology! congrats to Brady et al.!
Jase Gehring@JaseGehring

my brilliant collaborator Brady Weissbourd just posted this. they made GCaMP jellyfish and can now image neural activity across entire, live animals in response to stimuli. we always wonder, "what's that jelly thinking rn?" and Brady's gonna find out! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

@DiverseTerps @gloria_hc_kim @UofMaryland @UMDGradSchool While you have a great opp. to hire a diversity officer in the future to lead in making changes at UMD, it's still damning that nothing has happened to promote diversity in STEM in the past 5 yrs. Can you explain to our community why that is and *your* plan moving forward?
