Ppl are realizing that celebrities have nothing to do with tangible community and won’t ameliorate their material condition during a pandemic and celebrities can’t take their positionality being evacuated hence why they’re all going bonkers (???????????)

@bratton exactly. when in reality everyone is just playing variations on the same theme & its the datasets they should be worried about ...

@playdohscave And leads to simplistic programmer replacement remedies as if bias is to be found in that person’s identarian positionality.

I recall a conversion with someone who wrote a pretty good book on algorithmic bias. I asked them which algorithms are more susceptible to that abuse. They could not name a single algorithm (DFS? Flood Fill? Merge Sort?). I find this unfortunate and unnecessary.

@bratton Surely - but as you point out it makes for an unfortunate dynamic. Their work might still be valuable, but its also pretty dumb to apply the algorithmic bias framework to all algorithms when its only relevant to a small subset based on statistical methods.

@playdohscave Yes I know. They not only could not describe/ name those ML techniques, they could not name even the basic ones listed here. Doesn’t mean their work is wrong.
