@John_ForemanCBE @afneil If we protected Cyprus as we should then there should be no need to deploy carriers in the gulf region. Those carries should be Baltic and Indo-pacific. Cyprus can handle infinitely more aerial assets than any carrier.

@afneil As I wrote a few weeks ago (sadly on Linked In which I know you don't read). 'The fact that the only aircraft that can use the carriers are largely non operational is irrelevant. Because the carriers themselves are non operational!'

The current state of the Royal Navy: 2 aircraft carriers — neither operational. 6 Type 45 destroyers (our most powerful warships) — one operational (in Cyprus). 7 Type 23 frigates (less powerful, much older) — three operational 5 Astute class nuke-powered subs — one operational (in Arabian Sea?). Surely those responsible for this appalling state of unreadiness (a national embarrassment if ever there was one)— political, civilian and military — should be fired/charged. Their incompetence has effectively left us without a navy. Quite an achievement for an ancient island nation.

@afneil @Mullers1993 Dont forget to include OPV (offshore patrol vessels) Andrew for completeness. Surface fleet should increase when Type 26 and Type 31s come on stream over next 5 years.

Farage hasn’t learnt a thing from the Nathan Gill Russian bribery scandal. Reform accepting untraceable, anonymous crypto from across the globe is a direct threat to our national security. He must return the cash or admit he’s happy to let foreign money poison British politics.

@afneil Why do so many ‘serious’ news outlets report this 8% garbage as if it’s fact!

Just add 8% to current UK GDP to make up the Brexit ‘shortfall’, then compare our GDP growth to other major European and G7 economies — and it quickly becomes apparent it’s anything but credible!!
Noel Dowling@noelmarydowling

@afneil A credible academic paper in 2025 estimated that Brexit reduced the level of UK GDP by around 6–8%. Not an absolute fall in GDP, but a cumulative, gradual shortfall in economic growth compared to what it would have been if the UK had remained in the EU.

@nypost It’s obvious Apple don’t see their future in media devices. My current iPhone will be my last, they are so far behind the competition that I’ve determined they are not an option when I renew very soon. The content they force on you is very biased also which is another factor.

What an insult to our country by this increasingly unhinged narcissist. I suspect most British people - even those who loathe Starmer - will find this statement extremely disrespectful. As I have said previously, the populist Right in Britain is making a big mistake by hitching its wagons to Trump and his unpopular war.

@PaulEmbery Love him or hate him, Trump shoots from the hip using words we can all understand. Compare with Starmer, who speaks in soundbites and slogans whilst lying through his teeth. Trump’s language may be crude, but at least he can make a decision and stick to it!
