@benjaminmcnaney great take, editors love to practice animations but fail miserably in building stories, creating jeopardy or handling open loops
English

most editors think the big skill unlocks are effects, colour grading or flashy motion graphics
but the one that actually levels you up is learning how to cut properly, 90% of people do it robotically and cut every breath or every bit of dead air which turns the video into one big run on sentence so now the viewer is sat with information overload.
this is especially important in educational videos (like the ones we develop at plated.media 😉) where the viewer needs a pause to process the knowledge you've just delivered
fast cuts can be great for retention but if everything is fast then nothing is fast
trust me going from:
cut everything SUPER FAST MODE -> cut with intention and let the edit breathe
will be the biggest quality boost you ever make

@mangoster definetely guilty but it's lowkey true, i found out i get my best creative output when my mind is deprived and STARVING for stimuli

the easiest way to absolutely ENSURE 100% creative focus as an editor ultimately comes down to this one thing and one thing alone:
preventing yourself from feeling overwhelmed, at EVERY stage of the editing process
the endless tabs that you have open on your browser, the 14 different plugins that you have carefully integrated to your workspace, the 120bpm music u have playing in the background
ALL contribute to you feeling overwhelmed, leading to a creative ‘burnout’

I had a call recently with an editor who’s been editing for 7 years.
But he was stuck at $500/month with:
- Insane motion graphics.
- Crazy technical skill.
- Creative work
At one point he just stopped and said:
“Bro...I finally realized editing alone doesn’t make you money.”
And THAT hit me.
Because most editors are like him:
- They grind.
- They improve effects.
- They master keyframe
But they never learn the skills that actually attract high-paying clients.
Meanwhile I’ve worked with editors making $5K $10K+/mo who at first had zero idea about:
1. Outreach
2. Marketing & Copywriting
3. Positioning
They just learned the right business skills on top of editing and suddenly everything clicked.
There are two types of editors:
1) The highly-skilled, low-income editor.
Insane at After Effects.
But terrible at getting clients.
2) The editor who understands psychology + editing + messaging.
These mfs win.
They make videos people WANT to watch.
And they know how to position them as the solution.
This 7-year editor realized it on the call…
And once he fixes his offer + messaging, he’s going to blow past $500/mo very fast.
If you want me to break down exactly what high-paying clients actually look for in an editor…
Comment Biceps and I’ll DM it to you.
