What is a “hidden gem” of golf? In general, it’s undiscovered and/or underrated by the masses and relatively speaking, it’s undervalued. It might be off the beaten path. And it might lack marketing power or budget. It’s usually all of the above. Bandon was once a hidden gem, but that changed in a hurry. I think of The Classic at Madden’s on Gull Lake in Minnesota. Forest Dunes in Michigan was once a hidden gem. Same with Links at Lawsonia in Wisc. Turning Stone as a destination in Upstate NY remains a “hidden gem.” In Ireland, Carne was a hidden gem. But thanks to Tom Coyne and No Laying Up, people find it now. (🙋🏼‍♂️) Same with Cruit Island. And then there’s personal hidden gems. The ones that slip through our own gloves of what we try to consume. And thus, they become part of a “bucket list.” On this trip to Ireland/Northern Ireland, what I simplify as “The Island of Ireland,” I set out to hit a bucket list of MY hidden gems: Sutton Golf Club Corballis Links (Pic 1) Annesley at RCD Old Tom at Rosapenna Portsalon GC Donegal GC And I finally played Enniscrone! (Pic 3) In addition, I got to play Ardglass, which was a hidden gem, but not any more. It’s now getting the play and credit it deserves. I played St. Patrick’s Links (Pic 2), which is helping expose so many “hidden gems” in the North/Northwest. Today I’ll be roaming around Jameson Links, which continues to make changes and improvements to their course, amenities and lodging. And I played Portumna again (pic 4). Which remains a hidden gem probably because where it is and because it’s “parkland.” I’m told it’s ranked the 17th best parkland course in Ireland. There can NOT be 16 better parkland courses in the country. It’s not possible. The place is mint. It winds its way through a forest park (no houses, just trees, lakes and wildlife). It’s like Bethpage Black but in Minnesota. The Classic at Madden’s isn’t a bad comparison. (You can play Portumna today for €40.) Looking forward to sharing more about what was MY hidden gems of the Island of Ireland, and they might be some of yours…
