Found the duck and chicken hens having a sleepover this morning. Every day is a new experience here on the homestead…

The duck hen’s clutch of eggs were all failed attempts and we let her sit on them too long. It was making her anxious so I finally intervened… I figured she was a bit traumatized and was planning on giving her a month or two separate from the drake. But after about a week she was shaking her tail feathers at him and looking at me like, “Put me in coach, I’m ready.” Animals are so much better regulated and resilient than we are…good grief.

The jungle spirits are teaching me interesting lessons about the economy of life -particularly in wild places where life is abundant. Nothing is free and the import tax on new life (and other gifts from spirit) is typically paid in lifeblood. Nature spirits don’t accept wine as a substitute… Sacrifice is just a trade of life-value; intentionally settling your debt with currency you’ve set aside for the purpose. This prevents more natural forms of “tax” collection from occurring, like when you lose animals or crops to predators.

You shouldn't wear talismans every day, especially if they're potent ones. If you start to feel like you never want to take the talisman off, that's a warning sign you need to remove it. Prolonged exposure can warp your thoughts, like being under the influence on a constant basis
