He divides the public into “us vs them,” labeling immigrants, LGBTQ people, journalists, judges, and civil servants as enemies instead of fellow citizens. That’s authoritarian. He uses dehumanizing rhetoric that lowers the threshold for violence. Threats rise. Harassment rises. Violence follows. That’s authoritarian. He incited an insurrection, delayed intervention, minimized it, praised participants, and reframed them as patriots. That’s authoritarian. He rewards loyalty and excuses political violence, including pardons and promises of more. That’s authoritarian. He attacks courts, elections, investigators, and the press the moment they impose limits. That’s authoritarian. He turned Charlie Kirk’s memorial into a political spectacle, using it to label fellow Americans as enemies. That’s not mourning. That’s mobilization. That kind of language creates permission structures for violence. I’ve seen the effects of stochastic terrorism in my own family. This isn’t abstract. That’s authoritarian. And yes, his cognitive decline makes the pattern easier to see. Repetition. Projection. Grievance fixation. Third person self reference. Those are his words, publicly documented. That’s evidence. Authoritarianism isn’t about policy disagreements. It’s about whether the rule of law applies to the leader. With Trump, it doesn’t.
