@unnamedspacebee @thoughtxriot Again, what is with the pedantry and obsession with someone being objectively Right or Wrong? Silver bordered cards are nebulous as to whether they're "real" or not and whether the creature type functionally "existed" depends on the context in which we're saying "exists"

it's really bizarre how any tweet about Magic brings out some of the most outrageously absurd levels of nitpicking pedantry you could imagine. and while they blocked me...for the record, Scientist was not in the Comp Rules until Doctor Who. You can look this up lol.

@xolotltolox @naarubuster @goblinbiker 99% of modern 1v1 Magic is Standard or Modern, where this basically doesn't happen. Tron in Modern does kinda do this but they're appropriately punished for it when they have to keep a 4 with 3 tronlands and no payoff or whatever

@naarubuster @goblinbiker Mulliganing doesn't even make sense in MtG, it is supposed to be able to make you get hands that let you be able to cast spells, but people abuse them to try and draw the exact card(s) they need, such as Dredge hard mulling for Bazaar

(If a game isn't fun until you're good at it, that's a real design flaw! You can't just ignore that because the game is fun eventually, new players have to get interested somehow. That's a bit far afield though because imo Magic is extremely fun for new players)

I don't really have an original contribution to the Discourse itself, but I'm struck by how many Gamers are unable to articulate their design opinions without falling back on "get good scrub" type language. It's really childish

@EfrenHaz @wildstwawberry "put a land into play from your deck" vs "opponent draws a card and puts a counter" is often a legitimate decision, and in many gamestates you should consider both options...

@wildstwawberry Give my opponent a card and a +1/+1 counter, or volitionally make my opponent’s removal a better swords to plowshares? Gee, I wonder what should I choose

Me: is amulet titan not bannable despite remaining tier 0 or 1 through metas with KCI, Hogaak, Eldrazi, and Oko etc? Taco Bell cashier: Look buddy, it’s transient, shifting like water

AshleyBits is my favorite Magic: the Gathering Content Creator. She is so good at this trading card game and I especially enjoy it every time she talks about pauper, the premier format played by cool people.

@caro_irl One might argue that those people don't even engage with games differently than you do. They don't engage with the game at all

while i don't judge people who engage with games differently than i do, occasionally after someone finds out i play magic, i get asked if i also collect pokemon - no, the thought of spending money on cards that I don't intend to use as game pieces is completely foreign to me

An important game design lesson: do not create a button that, when pressed, gives someone a worse time. People will press it (because they think they want what it outputs) and then be upset that you gave them a worse time.

@toothymtg1 I view this as a positive. If turnout for TMNT (and future UB sets) are like this, then WoTC will have to be forced to course correct.

working at a local game store, for ECL by friday morning our prereleases were sold out and we were turning people away, filling our game room with 90-100 people per day, and had to borrow prerelease kits from other stores. for TMNT we have less than 100 across the three days

one of the more deranged things i do: because many mtg card names share words, on scryfall i instead type the last few letters of one word and the first few letters of the next word to more efficiently find the card i'm looking for e.g. for "lightning bolt" i type "ningbo"

@swordnwhorecery @wzrdnx The thing that hasn't been present for years is crossovers. Crossovers are inherently the problem and the thing I don't want.

@wzrdnx That doesn’t change the reality of my statement, everything people complain about in regards to UB has already been heavily present in magic for years at this point. The problem everyone should actually be worried about is the volume of sets, 7 per year will ACTUALLY kill magic

I think the emotion that best captures how I, and many others, feel about Universes Beyond is grief. it's the loss of something meaningful for what feels like a senseless reason. that's why the "argue with facts and logic" line frustrates me so much, because grief is irrational

Play trading card games. In a world where so many people don’t have a “3rd place” and don’t have the in person social interaction we want as humans. Card shops and locals help fill that void. Just shuffle up and play whatever game makes you happy. People are waiting for you.
W Magazine@wmag

“When I was growing up, I was really into cards,” Timothée Chalamet tells W. “I remember being 12 or 13 and going to Midtown Comics to play, and I loved how the game brought all these different classes and races together.
