A 7th place finish by @StanfordWGym and a National Championship by @StanfordMGym vaults (pun intended) @GoStanford back into 1st place in the Directors' Cup standings. The results were slightly better than expected, boosting the expected final score for Stanford by about 15 pts.

The Directors' Cup added 4 (now 5) required sports in the 2018 scoring update. These sports are the true team sports with the highest # of teams participating. M & W Bball (350/348 teams) W Soccer (335) W Vball (332) Baseball (293) Which, if any, other team sport would you add?

@StanfordWBBBlog If she’s graduating in June then she should do what she wants, go pro or go somewhere else if she wants. Sorry to see her leave but this isn’t leaving early any more than Andrew Luck did when he turned pro after he graduated, even though he had a year of eligibility left.

@Direct_Cupdates @BoloTiesAreCool Stanford also has to manage very different academic requirements, a student population that’s smaller than UT Austin’s freshman class, and they only graduate 97% of their athletes. Clearly a very uneven playing field.

@BoloTiesAreCool 31 vs 20. And remember, each school can only count 19 sports. I do agree that some scoring adjustments could be made to make things more competitive. The changes in 2018 have worked, but only to a degree. Stanford would have won the two that Texas won w/o the changes.

This particular award did not exist prior to 1993. The Capitol One cup began in 2010.

The final championship of the season goes to @LSUbaseball as the @LSUsports #GeauxTigers jump into the top 10. 2nd place for @GatorsBB clinches a top 10 finish and the @FloridaGators continue to be 1 of only 2 teams to finish in the top 10 every year of the #DirectorsCup.

@RVAwonk You should look at the history of SSL server certs. VeriSign ran into precisely this problem in the late 90’s and early aughts. Having an SSL server cert indicated a level of identity auth but was interpreted to mean trust as well.

For now, just be cognizant of the fact that our brains love to take shortcuts like substituting a blue checkmark for the work of independently verifying the credibility of an account or its account, so we all need to be careful not to fall into that trap.

I had a discussion about Twitter’s verification system with a senator’s office recently, and I told them that one of the fundamental challenges here is that the system has *never* been reliable nor has it ever been clear what verification actually signifies. 1/
