Directors' Cup Top 10 Scoresheet Countdown After finishing in 2nd place last year, the @USC_Athletics Trojans finish 7th place in this years Directors' Cup. 1st and 2nd place finishes by Women's and Men's Water Polo leads the way to go along with a 2nd place finish in Women's Golf.

Directors' Cup: Red River Shootout Edition This is how the Directors' Cup scores for Texas and Oklahoma would look if the two schools played the exact same sports. This removes M Swimming (1st place - 100 points), W Swimming (3rd place - 85 points) and Beach Volleyball (3rd place - 83 points) from Texas' score (total -268 pts). For Oklahoma, W and M Gymnastics are dropped (1st place - 100 points and 2nd place - 90 points) and Wrestling (30th - 44 points) is too. A total of 234 points. The 3 sports dropped end up being pretty equal.

The @UGAAthletics Bulldogs and AD @Brooks_UGA finish out a strong athletic season with an 8th place ranking in the Directors' Cup. @UGATrack led the way with 2 championships by the Women and a 2nd place finish by the men. @BaseballUGA and @UGAtennis both finished tied-3rd.

Top 10 Scoresheet Countdown: The @UMichAthletics Wolverines edge out rival Ohio State, finishing in 9th place overall. A @umichbball championship leads the way with 3rd place finishes in Men's Gymnastics and Hockey also adding significant points.

Dang it, forgot to remove that. Sometimes I attach symbols to scores when added data early. The symbol stops it from being included in score calculation until later removed. I used the $ symbol years back. It didn’t work and it changes the format of the cell to dollars. I just need to change the cell format back to “number”

Top 10 Scoresheet Countdown: The @ohiostathletics Buckeyes come in at number 10. The Buckeyes were led by podium finishes in W Hockey and W Tennis. The Buckeyes field 33 teams and scored points in 19 sports.

@RichardLun46730 There were no required sports in the old format.

@Direct_Cupdates Excellent work, kudos to Texas. I think Stanford's 2022 score under the old format would actually be lower - 1401.5. WVB was a mandatory sport, so Stanford WGyn (60.75) would have to replaced with WVB (50)...?

The 2018 scoring changes opened the door for Texas to win 5 of the last 6 Directors' Cups. BUT, even under the old scoring system (top 10 men's scores + top 10 women's scores) Texas would have won the cup in 2022 and 2024. The new system reduced the number of total teams from 20 to 19. This helped schools with fewer sports. It also eliminated the gender requirements. This helped schools that had <10 men's sports on campus. Further, 4 (now 5) required sports were added, which hurt schools - like Stanford - that don't score points in those sports. Notes: Fencing was coed at this time must count as a women's sport for scoring. Texas only has 9 men's sports. Automatically taking a 0 in the old format.

@TkacikMilo It’s a great question and I wish I knew. It would take a lot of work and i imagine it would be hard to find all the needed info for each sport.

@Direct_Cupdates Are there any changes in previous winners if the new system is used since 1993?

@drr78703 They’ve had success in big 4 sports (aside from men’s hoops) in the recent past. But it’s the more recent struggles in the required sports (baseball and even now women’s hoops) that has opened the door for Texas.

@Direct_Cupdates So weird. Stanford wins a sports trophy even though you never hear their name is any sports that matter to the masses. Olympic sports should not be factored in unless all schools compete.

I would say the old system allowed large programs (like Stanford) to win with a 66% success rate (even without success in marquee sports) while average sized programs (like Texas) could win but needed a 90% success rate. There were other large programs that could have won but none had the success that Stanford had. The new system has changed this slightly - the success rates needed are about the same but you must also succeed at the required sports.

@Nellinose @Direct_Cupdates Unsure if @Nellinose claim would hold over most of first 25 cup years. Many ups & downs in now-req'd sports for both Stanford, TX, others over span. e.g. Stanford was top-tier WHoops & only down in past 3 years. Would be interesting to re-run all older scores under new '18 rule

Here are the top 10 all time scores: Note: in 1997 championships went from being worth 64 points to 100 points. Further, in 2018 only 19 scores were counted vs 20 previously. 2019 Stanford and 2022 Texas are notable inclusions here as they make the list with only 19 scores.
