🌊 Last weekend, some lucky kayakers and snorkelers came across a rare deep-sea dwelling fish in La Jolla Cove. The seagoers spotted a 12-foot #oarfish and to give you an idea of how rare this encounter is, only 20 oarfish have washed up in California since 1901!

Congrats to PhD student Amanda Horch for her paper just published on a new species of bopyrid parasite of snapping shrimp from Brazil! She spent a very productive year in my lab and this is the first of multiple pubs from that work. zoolstud.sinica.edu.tw/Journals/63/63…

This red volcano with blue lava is the cup of a deep-sea hormathiid anemone slowly secreting a bioluminescent mucus. Unlike the previous photo of this animal, the mucus hasn’t flowed into the water, but instead is strongly coating the surface of the anemone.

This is the spew bioluminescence of the deep-sea benthic shrimp Heterocarpus ensifer. I've shown it before, but the clouds of light (generated by ingredients from two locations on each side of the mouth) are so pretty and varied that they're worth showing again.

This is the humpback angler fish Melanocetus johnsoni, famous for its bioluminescent lure and its tiny males that attach themselves permanently to the females. I love how the eyes seem to be permanently fixed on the lure. Finding food down there must be a bear.

This shy guy is an unidentified deep-sea isopod. This is not one of the huge benthic ones (Bathynomus) but instead is about the size of a thumb and lives in the water column. Many marine isopods are parasitic and suck blood from fish, but this one may be free-living.
