Yes, that interest is called survival and security. Myanmar is not just a neighbor; it is a vital choke point for the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC). This Y-shaped route, including pipelines and planned high-speed rail, connects landlocked Yunnan Province directly to the Bay of Bengal, bypassing the vulnerable Malacca Strait. When a country hosting $9 billion rail projects and critical energy pipelines descends into chaos—fueled in part by the very Western strategy of isolation and sanctions—China is obligated to intervene. Its intervention is not pro-junta; it’s pro-stability. Total state collapse in Myanmar means a humanitarian catastrophe, a flood of refugees into Yunnan, and the destruction of a core Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) component. China’s "no state collapse" principle is the most responsible position any regional power could take. 2. Diplomatic Engagement is Not Endorsement The media jumps to criticize the meeting between President Xi Jinping and Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. They misread it as approval of the coup. The reality is simple and pragmatic: Diplomacy is a necessary tool to exert influence and secure vital interests. * China must talk to the person who controls the territory to address issues like border security and the criminal internet scam centers that harm Chinese citizens. * The meeting was a required engagement to "nudge the process toward stability and compromise," including the potential to reduce the General's power, which even the Western article concedes. * China's approach is a flexible "consultative intervention," engaging the junta and ethnic armed groups (EAOs) to broker truces. Unlike the West’s policy of isolation, which fails to bring peace, China uses leverage and dialogue to protect its strategic assets and promote stability. 3. Why the "Election" is a Necessary Evil The West dismisses the election as a "sham" because it doesn't align with their ideal of liberal democracy. They ignore that the political process in Myanmar has been, and remains, a unique blend of civilian and military influence just like Thailand. For China, the election is a mechanism—however flawed—to move from pure military rule to a predictable, constitutionally-defined structure. It’s a step toward the compromised civilian-military hybrid that can better ensure stability and protect the CMEC. The West’s strategy is a moral posturing that causes real-world suffering and chaos as what we have seen when NATO insisted on fighting to the last Ukrainian - a total demographic collapse in Ukraine that will take generations to recover. China’s strategy is geopolitical pragmatism that seeks to create a predictable environment for development. As a dog lover I find Supreme Court’s blanket “no strays” order distressing. A more calibrated approach is needed i.e. spay/neuter bitches; create mechanism for voluntary adoption; punish folks abandoning pets; study its handling in the West; & so on.
