I polled 25-plus high-major coaches and this is what I came up with as far as salary numbers for this season. Obviously, there will be some outliers but this is a pretty good feel for what guys are getting now. PROJECTED ELITE GUYS (Top 10-15): $2.5 to 4 million PROJECTED ALL-LEAGUE PLAYER: $1.5 to 2.5 million PROJECTED STARTERS: $500K to 1.5 million PROJECTED BENCH PLAYER: $200K to 700K

We are seeing a lot of athletes agreeing to pay NIL agents. In some situations, this is a good thing. In others, it’s a miscalculation of their playing level and this decision can hurt their recruiting. Here is some perspective on NIL across the high, mid, and low major levels of Division 1 college basketball: There are 364 men’s basketball teams in NCAA Division 1. *POWER CONFERENCES: There are under 90 total schools from power conferences and select mid-major programs who are paying over a million dollars to their total men’s basketball roster this year. There are reports of $4M+ men’s basketball collectives from select schools representing the SEC, Big 12, Big 10, Big East, and ACC. Newest estimates discuss the top NIL collectives ballooning close to $10M for the 2025-26 season. For high major prospects (top 1% of all basketball players), it is often times in their best interest to hire someone to help navigate this process. It is important to note that having representation costs money. NIL agents typically charge 10-20% while NBA agents are capped at 4% by the NBA Players Association (NBPA). If a high major player is in a leveraged position, they can also consider representing themselves while hiring a private attorney to overlook the contract and paperwork. This costs a few hundred dollars an hour which is fractional compared to sharing 10%-20% of the gross NIL contract. *MID-MAJOR CONFERENCES: Approximately 140 of the 364 Division 1 programs at the mid-major and select low-major level have NIL collectives that pay between $200,000-$1M to their total men’s basketball roster. This is an average of $15,000-$75,000 per player for the academic year. Most mid-major teams will stack their top talent and pay minimal or zero NIL to the backend of their roster. Athletes who are firm mid-major players should consider hiring someone to help them navigate the process. They should also consider working independently instead of sharing potential revenue with an NIL agent. *LOW-MAJOR CONFERENCES: Approximately 140 of the 364 Division 1 programs, mostly low-major and select mid-major, do not have an active or substantial NIL collective. Most men’s basketball players on these rosters receive an estimated average of $5,000-$15,000 total in compensation for the academic year. Payments are through a combination of COA (cost of attendance), off-campus housing stipends, and/or through the school’s non-substantial NIL collective. It would be tough to justify and is often times counter-productive for athletes at this level to have an NIL agent as there isn’t revenue to share. One low major conference athletic director once told me while joking, “Revenue sharing? Perhaps players are willing to do deficit sharing?” There are a few problems student-athletes are running into in determining if they should get an NIL agent or not: 1. Many athletes are unrealistic about their level and ability. This isn’t a new phenomenon, rather, something that’s taken place since the beginning of time. 2. It is very difficult for student-athletes and their families to differentiate between a legitimate NIL agent and those who aren’t qualified. Player’s DM’s are getting hit up all the time with promises and speculation. It can get confusing. There are some impressive NIL agents who are experts in the field and represent both players and coaches at the professional and college level. Unfortunately, there are many people who title themselves as “NIL agents” who have no education and minimal agent experience and understanding of sports law.
