This isn’t really an enigma at all. He cares about the art of cinema, but he doesn’t care about historical accuracy in a myth. Shooting on location with practical, in-camera effects whenever possible makes the movie look better, and historical accuracy doesn’t necessarily do that

Nolan is so funnily stupid sometimes - shoots "on location" for places that don't exist anymore, avoids CGI at all costs because of "realism" but couldn't care less about the historical realism of the costumes, sets or actors. His mind is an enigma.

People are hating on The Odyssey mainly because Nolan seems to have contempt for the epic he's adapting. He clearly does not respect or care for it at all, every shot from the movie is devoid of passion.

I feel the same way when people complain about Wes Anderson, at some point you have to accept a director's style as part of the experience. This is Nolan's 13th film and he's consistently worked within a similar visual palette. Acting surprised by that now feels silly.

I don't think trailers are ever above criticism, but when it comes to The Odyssey I do think ppl need to meet Nolan halfway on his vision at the very least. He was never making some campy colorful epic. He just wasn't, that's never been him
