We're sorry to hear Books Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 - facebook.com/story.php?stor… - and sad that the 1491 Shattuck Ave. Berkeley store is closing. (We still have a PLP wishlist online at BI - booksinc.net/wishlist/javan… - and displays at many other stores.)

Sharing this letter that caught our eye at a recent book packing session.

Because prisons claim *potential* for drugs. WI officials confirmed to prison book programs that our programs have done nothing, but mere *possibility* means donated books are now totally banned, severing crucial lifelines. Blanket bans can't be allowed on such flimsy pretenses!

This incarcerated person writes: "I'm proud to say I've been becoming a bookworm & have come to love and value books..." What are you reading these days? We would love to hear.

We love this letter sent to the PLP.  The writer raises a very valid point about prisons frequently not giving access to books that could help people find their way after they leave prison.  For example, we offer high quality trade skill books, and certain prisons ban them.

PLP received this poem last month. In many cases, incarcerated folks don’t have anyone on the outside who is willing or able to send books this way. This is why we are committed to our mission to get books to people behind bars.
