#willtrent Was that a real-life piece of music the symphony was playing, or just something written for the show?

@thomasforth Classical Liberalism = freedom for (doing what you want).
US politico-economic Liberalism = freedom from (hunger etc).
US politico-econ Conservatives and Libertarians = adopted a renewed emphasis on freedom for.

I learned from this that The New Deal is considered Liberalism in the USA. (I asked Gemini to confirm that, and it says yes it is).

Here's a blog post I wrote about the shift, but it's more about policy and politics than about culture. I am not great at writing about culture, but maybe at some point I'll try. noahpinion.blog/p/where-does-a…

@DrewBMcIntyre In the old days they used to say, wherever there’s 4 Episcopalians there’s a fifth.

That was a good thing they did on the #WillTrent episode “We’re Looking for a Vampire” - showing how to administer Narcan to someone experiencing a drug overdose. (Also very good growth in character relationships.)

This place is the only national park besides the Grand Canyon that I just stood in awe and couldn’t comprehend. Every other place I have visited I thought “yep, looks like the pictures.” Not this one. Your eyes can’t reconcile their enormity until you see someone standing on the other side, even then, it doesn’t quite compute.

The mysterious Paris photographer
When France fell in June 1940, Paris came under German military control and the Swastika replaced the Tricolour flag of the former French republic.
Someone took a camera and snapped forbidden photos of the occupier, writing sarcastic texts on the back of the photos.
Then, in 2020, an album containing 370 of these photos was purchased at a flea market in southern France.
Nobody knew who the photographer was....

Speaking of this, I was headed to the train station and saw many sidewalks are still covered in thick ice. Halfway there, I saw a gentleman in a wheelchair being pushed by presumably his wife. They were older, and she was having a hard time.
I’ve mentioned this before, but I grew up with a father who is a paraplegic. He’s been paralyzed since I was born, and I grew up surrounded by many friends who are wheelchair users.
My German is still pretty terrible (and that is truly my own fault), but I’ve learned a smile and kindness does go far. She was struggling to push, so I motioned and said I could try for a bit. I’m by no means the strongest person, but I was able to safely navigate the wheelchair to the street (which was a smaller side street and not busy). We decided that this was the only real option and walked down it together until we got to sidewalks that were treated.
It all worked out, but it was a reminder to myself that I complain too much some days about small things that don’t really matter.

In defense of NOT using salt, I have to say that it really does destroy things—from plants to even cars. The roads in Ithaca, NY are salted so excessively in the winter that everyone who lives there knows you have to wash your car DAILY in winter (with an undercarriage cleaning) to prevent the whole bottom of your car from rusting away.

A man was rescued from a deserted island after a decade of isolation.
As the ship sailed away, the Captain asked the man,
"Did you build those structures on the ridge?"
The man replied, " Yes,that's my home, and that one is my church."
"What's the third building?"
"Oh," said the rescued man with disdain, "that's where I USED to go to church.'

One of the best rainbows I've seen all year. Out in the Wolds this pm for a walk and saw the start of a bow form. After 2mins the rain came and this full bow appeared in the sky. Shooting it is one thing but doesn't show the emotion of actually seeing it ! #rainbow

@prof500 @cardamomkiss Great question, I used Natural Earth. It’s a beautiful projection. I spent a lot of time deciding, testing, talking to people with expertise about it. Couldn’t be happier with the choice en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_E…
