With mountains of blackened snow on the ground and a city still smarting from the harshest cold snap in recent memory, what headlines the LinkNYC tablet? SUMMER IN NYC. HOW TO FIND A COOLING CENTER. It is always summertime in the set-and-forget Smart City!

@Normie_Slayerr I'll be surprised if they fix those WEA phones. CityBridge once told Gale Brewer those phones were working when they were not. I've never seen those booths with exposed panels before this. Not a good maintenance look. BK Central Library still has one working phone.

I contacted LinkNYC regarding them, and they stated maintenance has been notified. Because of the exposed panel, I can see how these things worked. Looks like they used Inseego FWTs. Penn Station phone is dead, but the line is still active.

@projectpayphone I visited NYC on MLK day, so I had to check on some phones including the four West-End booths, Macy phones, NY Penn Station phone, Newark Penn Station phones, and a working payphone inside a bar (that only allows toll-free, sadly).

@Normie_Slayerr Looks like a good tour, thanks for sharing. I don't know the Spaniard but it would take a lot for me to enter most any bar these days. They finally killed Main Street 7 train station but the phone might still be there, I might check on it this weekend.

And a working-ish payphone inside The Spaniard! Installed by Mike's Vintage Telephones, looks like this Protel had its programming go sour and only allows 800-877 toll-free numbers. Bring your prepaid phone card. I was gonna explore more bar phones but ran out of time.

Followed NYC payphones to the bitter end. Time to go beyond. Tracking forensic residue of places where payphones used to be. Mapping but not giving away to culture scrapers. Too much legwork/original research. Filmmakers ask "Where's that payphone residue?" I say FIND IT YOURSELF

@TumsForMen That's what typically happens when you call a working payphone. It goes to internal modem that the payphone owner can connect to via computer with Elcotel software and get earnings and other readings.

"Hi MT. My wife and I were hiking near our home yesterday when we came upon a well-maintained payphone at the Interpretive Center within the Foothills Nature Preserve of Palo Alto. It even had a new phone book inside a plastic PacBell cover.  (650) 948-9881. Happy Thanksgiving!"

@MTA I could have purchased a kick ass AI PC with the money I wasted paying MTA fares this year. When I see generations of New Yorkers bypassing fares, dozens upon dozens of us from 10 to 70p, i think about being a real New Yorker. But then I relent. I am an honest man. It costs me.

While we upgrade the OMNY system, you will not be able to buy or load OMNY Cards for some time this weekend (October 3-5). Trip and charge history will also be unavailable. Tapping at the turnstile or on buses will not be affected. The upgrade will begin on October 3 at 10 p.m. and is expected to be completed by Sunday, October 5. Load your OMNY Card for the weekend before Friday evening, or use your contactless card or device to tap and ride throughout the weekend. Learn more: omny.info/system-upgrade

@farmerjaneusa @JackStr42679640 That is an interesting communications experiential account. I once picked up a dollar bill. Instantly a woman was in my face saying "That must be so exciting for you!" She was 2 feet away and right in my face but not talking to me. This was early cellphone/headset days.

Just got done listening... the novelty of it just opens up something in people. Brought me back to that feeling when I was a kid and used to call payphones and sometimes pick them up. Even when chatrooms on the internet were new, it wasn't quite the same feeling. It was like the anti-feeling of what I got when I was in a grocery store aisle and there was a man standing like 5 feet from me and he said something and I then realized he wasn't talking to me, and he wasn't talking to himself... and from then on something in me broke - I had to learn to ignore those people near me talking and I also couldn't say anything to them without interupting their conversation. Now it's gone to ladies in the restroom are on facetime and think nothing of it. *sigh*

@farmerjaneusa @JackStr42679640 That's pretty much what my website ended up being. Something like 750k payphone number you could click to call. It's become a data museum, which has its own purpose. What to do with the hundreds upon hundreds of payphone pictures I amassed...
